Owen makes a variety of noises, he is constantly cracking us up with his grunts, groans and snoring. But the strangest noise to date is his crazy Howling. He sounds like a wolf, and what's really crazy is he actually howls at the sight of the moon. It doesn't have to be full, just bright in the night sky. Last night he was laying on the deck just howling away. I finally brought him inside but he proceeded to lay by the door and continue his little howling act. Does anybody elses Newf react this way to the moon?

Catie makes the Scooby Doo noise when she is confused or startled. She makes a little oof noise before she lets out with a full throated bark sometimes. Ruby just barks, she does it to warn or greet or just to let us know she needs something. Neither seem to notice the moon when we let them out after dark, however wild cottontails (rabbits)sometimes get inside the fence and can be seen if the moon is bright enough. Newfies have the chase instinct just like other dogs but so far they haven't caught a bunny.

Samuel howls but not at the moon. He just howls whenever he feels like it. Sounds funny though.

He is quite the talker -- seems like he has certain noises for whatever question he is asked. When Taylor was alive she was quiet and didn't bark or make funny noises. So Samuel is quite a change for us.

Aren't they fun?

Bo has never howled (I wish he would :D ) but he talks "wookie." All kinds of growly grumbles as he's coming to greet you. We've had to explain to a few people that he's not agressive...it's just his way of saying "hi"!

Jake is a "Wookie" talker also. He growls, grunts, whines, and woofs. My 11 yr old daughter lays on the floor nose to nose with him and they "talk" to each other.

Maggie is a wookie-talker. ( And a close-barker )

Lucy is a sound-off howler.

Man, sure do think a moon-howler is cool. Trees and indoor confinement preclude moon views. So, maybe there is still hope!

HB is silent unless you are being..'summoned'. That is when she has something up a tree and wants help..(don't ask.. ;) ..or something bigger than she..has arrived on her kennel fence at night..or if the rental gal..is sounding afraid..and THEN..it's Katy bar the door! Guys with abuse or hassle..on their mind..leave quickly. Otherwise..just a very few snorts and woofles..as she breathy-talks..right into your face. When we are in the same area..I talk to her all the time..working on building up her vocab. and knowing the 'emotive educational feed'..from ..my perspective. ina n HB

Ben has this big deep bark howl combo that he does when he is really guarding thinking something is in the yard. It almost sounds like a deep yodling...it's hillarious, but when he does it you know he means business!!! He also "talks" like crazy, almost talking back, it's funny because he has so much bass. And SNORING!!! Oh my goodness can this guy snore, he sounds human, worse than my hubby even :D

I found a website a few years back that had at the start of the site when it was opening you could hear a Newfy barking, kinda like the yodling bark I''m talking about. I can't remember the name of the website, but I do remember that the name of the dog on the website was Gus...I though that was a great name for a Newf. Does anyone know the one I'm talking about?

Stoli howls at Metallica (only one song though) and ambulance sirens. When he's really salty, like when we take too long to get up and let him out, he kinda goes "woo woo woo". And he does the perfect wookie impressions whenever he's rolling around.

Brady howls at planes flying over our house. Not the ones you can hear just the ones that have that long line of white smoke behind them. We can't hear them. Way up in the sky. The ones the fly close he doesn't even acknowledge. Timmy howls at my husband when he is being too slow to take them to the beach.

Gandalf has started howling recently, only when we leave him alone, which isn't very often. It is pathetic. That boy is tone deaf
Gus the basset, OTOH, can howl quite well, but seems not to like to. Natalie and I can get him going, but otherwise forget about it...
