How do they get "puffy" feet?

I want to know...how do newfs get those puffy feet? Sam's most decidedly are not puffy. I have tried letting the hair grow more on his feet, but it just sprouts long between his toes like grass in sidewalk cracks. I tried brushing all the fur straight up and cutting the ball shape, which looked nice, but not like the bear paws I just saw on Gilly"s picture (she is beautiflu, btw...happy b-day pregnant Gilly!) Her feathers were also thick all the way to the ground, but Sam's seem to stop at his ankles...is this grooming, genetics, or what? Oh, and I still love my Sammy even if he will not have grizzly feet. :D

Naked ankles:

Weedy feet:

Not very successful puffy feet grooming attempt:

I think Sam is gorgeous .......Mine do not have the real puffy feet either..........But i have been working on Lukey's coat and he is doing quite well at showing now, even without puffy feet :)
I have no pics of his feet, but this shows his coat now. it was a disaster when we got him

I think your Sam is quite handsome too and you did a very nice job on grooming his feet. Those puffy feet and full feathers that you see on Jilly is the result of genetics. Not all newfies have the same kind of coat. I can get those pretty puff ball feet and full feathers on my girl Glory but cannot get the same results with my boy Henry. They come from two different lines and have two different coat types. And both of them are very special to me!!!!

Yes, we have 2 different here....Zeke puff ball and Myra not so much. But your Sam "is the man" he looks wonderful and your grooming attempt looks a bit better than mine. I could only do 1/2 of Zeke, got concerned doing the back end.

Elvis just gets what we call "Grinch feet". If you've ever read the book or seen the cartoon movie of the Grinch Who Stole Christmas, look at his hands and feet. His green fur grows far over the tips, which is what Elvis' does.

Oh my goodness! This is what we used to call my golden's hairy feet! Grinch feet! I was just about to post that that's what we called it when I saw yours. That makes me so happy!

Yep, the puffy/rounder feet is genetic. Cole, Frankie and Addie have them (although hers are much smaller), Molly, Chance and Mira don't. I call them cat feet because that's what they look like to me.

If you still want to try a bit, one thing that helps get the look is to keep the nails really short (trim them every week to get them so they only reach the ends of the pad area and don't curve down). If they're short you can "round" the shape of the foot without the nails getting in the way.

Once the hair on the feet is rounded, comb the hair on top up (which will pull the long areas out of the middle of the toes) and then trim that off, but do not trim right to the foot. Leave a little bit so you can also shape that into a ball shape.

Oh...and don't expect it to stay that way. It'll go flat after about 30 mins or sooner. LOL You can keep brushing it up but the only time I do that is for shows.

It is cute when they're first done, but really not something I do daily. Your boy's feet look just fine to me, and his coat is just like my Mira's. Softer, longer and wavy. I like that coat too.

Brenna has serious coat, and very puffy feet, when I trim them right. Her coat is much coarser, all over.
Maggie has a lot of coat, but, like Sam, the hair grows long between the toes, but never ON the feet. Her coat is pretty soft.
Lucy, our landseer, had a fluffy silky coat that people loved to run their fingers through, and smooth feet with long hairs between the toes.

Jeannie explains on her grooming video how to get the puff ball feet...true, all feet are not alike, but ...Jeannie, want to give us a brief description of how to do it? I'm sure I won't explain it right.

I've noticed that Sue and Laurel have both mentioned that their Landseers don't have puffy feet. Molly has a TON of coat, and doesn't have puffy feet either. The white is much more silky than the black is.

Thank your all for your comments and information. :sunflower: I think he is handsome, too!

Grinch feet! Ha! And Dawn, they are nankles...unless perfectly fluffed, they are practically bare.

I'm glad to know it is just the coat...I haven't been around many other newfs to see the differences, and Sam is my first one.

Ronnie, what you have done foe Lukey is awesome...from terror in the ring to champion. How cool is that? :groovy: I think it is so good for them to help them overcome their fears.

Donna...30 minutes back to flat, huh? Oh well! :D

Thanks again, all!
