Hot spots.

I have a two year old female, newf. We're on the coast in Virginia and this summer has been a bit hotter than most. She's been getting spots in her chin mostly and a few smaller ones around her body.
I'm looking for general information on hot spots, how to care for them, and how to avoid them.

Thank you!

The best way to avoid them is to keep her thoroughly combed out and dry. Keep her indoors and cool and use a dog dryer if she swims. If she gets one, clip the hair around the spot and again, keep the area dry. Don't let her lick them.

I sent you a message, bbattleship! When we first adopted our Newf 6 months ago, she kept getting hot spots....one right after the other. No matter what we did! I took everyone's advice and invested in a good canine dryer (k9-iii). We blow her coat out every few days and if she swims. It has worked wonders. I'm serious when I say, before this, she wore her cone for 6 weeks straight! I think it makes a big difference when you can get the undercoat out so her skin can breathe. Good luck and I hope to hear back from you! We are on the coast of Virginia too!

Also, you might towel dry the chin when it gets wet from drinking, and be sure the food bowl is washed at least once a day, as bacteria forms in it and can cause skin problems on the lips and chin.
