horrible odor

Sally, my first newf has recently developed an awful dog smell. She is spayed,5 years old is professionally groomed every six weeks. She had her teeth cleaned 3 months ago and I have never had this problem before. I have not changed her diet. Her breath is getting bad and I am thinking her drool may be contributing to the odor in her coat. Along with her teeth cleaning she had a well check up. Could it just be bad breath? What about chlorophyll drops? This is my first time posting!

I would take her in to the vet for a check up. The odor could be caused by a number of things and it could be emanating from a variety of places. If it's just coat, you will get many suggestions here, but if it's from inside, I think a vet trip should be in order first. Then we will be able to help you better.

I agree, go to the Vet and have them check her over. It *could* be an ear infection, something wrong with a tooth, digestive issues, something caught in between teeth, etc.

I just wanted to update everyone who responded to my question. Sally got a clean bill of health at the vets'. We figured out what the smell was and it is her coat. She was swimming everyday and we were not getting her coat dry enough and then she would lay around, still damp and never really dry. I need to invest in a good blower- any suggestions? Thanks for your input.

Whew! Glad it was not anything serious and I'm very proud of you for taking her into the vet to make sure.

There are a number of good dog dryers and you'll get some great suggestions. There are some other things you can also do to help.

Listerine, diluted half and half with water, helps kill bacteria that causes odor. Just spritz it on her coat and work it in a bit. Good for that stinky chest area.

Rinse her after she swims if you don't have time for a full bath. Do at least towel dry her until you get your new dryer.

Brush her frequently to get out the undercoat that traps dirt and odor.

Buy some concentrated Crown Royale Magic Touch formula #3 finishing spray. It makes your dog smell REALLY good! A little goes a long way.

Thanks for the tips for her coat. We do bathe and towel dry her after her swim but she never truly dries and it is the chest area that the smell is really bad. I will try the Listerine mixture and the finishing spray.

A viniger water mix also helps to keep coat & skin healthy & sweet smelling.
As for a dryer, I bought a regular human hair dryer with a cool setting [not just cool shoot]. It works great, takes a bit of time, but with only one dog that is not a problem.

Take the mars coat king to the chest area, and get some of the hair out. You can also clip a channel in that ruff of hair, won't even be noticeable, but will help the chest dry out. I had one years ago that always smelled like a dirty sock in the summer LOL...because you could NOT keep her out of the water. I finally thinned and shortened the chest hair a lot every spring, and that helped.

I, too, do the vinegar and water rinse after swimming. It helps a lot. I agree with all of above tips...
As far as the dryer. I went for the big gun and invested in the K-9 III dryer. Expensive but well worth it. It takes me about an hour and 15 minutes to dry my Newf. He's usually still a little damp in some areas but he has a very thick, heavy coat.
