Hera performs WRDX exercises

Hera performs the WRDX exercises in test order with no repeats, no breaks and no cookies. Of course she got a big jackpot reward at the end. So pleased with her!!

Some of you are aware that I was concerned with her bite. She seems to have gotten the memo. After the unconscious victim rescue, the steward told me that it was the softest bite he'd ever experienced from any dog in that exercise. :D

I'll always take some good luck whenever I can get it. You never know what might happen at a test. We're entered in CNC and will enter in SENC too. I get butterflies just thinking about it. It's so nerve-wracking!!

She was a rescue?
She, along with 4 littermates and mom and dad, were picked up from an animal shelter by SENC Rescue. I believe there were 5 other puppies that the breeder had sold before turning the others into the shelter.

Lauren, thank you for posting this! AWESOME! So valuable and instructional to watch it actually being done. You have trained Hera fabulously.

Saved and bookmarked for repeat viewing.

How on earth does a Newf owner find other ppl to train with? I will be able to do a huge amount of it with Orka and our kayak by myself but obviously at some point one needs other ppl to play "victim."

Have not yet met anybody around here remotely interested in getting together to do any kind of training whatsoever. How do you folks find kindred souls?
Yes I've asked at the club and members seem to not even want to talk about it. They have a rowboat stored for member use and a site they use but they are worried about the algae at the site. And there's some rumor about only breeders doing their own thing with buyers of their own pups but asked about that directly to the breeder and got a blank.

This is such a wonderful activity for Newfoundlands, very puzzled why a Newfie Club is not more into it and does not provide any training / workshops / group endeavors. Fortunately I have books and videos and the equipment to do most of it on my own but how eventually I'll need to get water training friends, no idea.

Will have to research if it's possible to do the tests with a kayak instead of a rowboat.

I can tell you that it is not easy. The people I train with are from all over the southeast. I drove 4 hours to TN this weekend for the training that you see in the video. Last week, Uschi's mom drove 5 hours to meet us at a site that's an hour from my house. Last year I drove 5 hours away to train at a site in GA. Most people drive at least an hour, but often times, 3, 4 or 5 hours to get to a training site to meet with people.

Every so often someone will ask about training with us, but when they learn that it's an hour from their house they don't show up. It takes a lot of commitment to meet with people because they are few and far between in a lot of cases.

Ahso! Thanks Lauren. That explains a lot. All the more kudos to you for your training dedication! Hera is a big inspiration for me.

Lauren, one thing you will need to work on is the capsized raft. The steward is NOT suppose to lift the raft up after the rescue under the raft. We discussed this in great length at the National with the working dog committee. You might want to change that part of your training although I think Hera won't have any problem lifting that raft!

I don't understand how that's possible. The regulations say "The victim is permitted to raise the back of the raft on the way out, if necessary for safety, and to protect the victim from catching his/her life jacket on the handles of the raft." I've only seen it done with the steward raising the raft after the dog has gone under. Is the steward supposed to swim under back of the raft while holding on to the dog as well?

I'm so impressed when I see these dogs at work! I, too, wish there were some people closer by who I could train with. Texas is a mighty long way!
