Hello all and thanks for reading and responding. Avid reader, but minimal poster. My newfie is a big guy, stands taller then most and weighs 180. Koda looks fit but it has been recommended that he should get to 170. I currently rotate Fromm Salmon, Holistic Select Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon, and Nustrica GF Salmon. I supplement with salmon oil and cosequin. Need to stay with salmon/fish and if possible, potato free due to allergies. Here is the challenge: 1- is reducing the food and adding green beans to "fill" him ok? 2- Is there a better food? And 3- Koda just had surgury Friday for his ruptured ACL at UF so activity is next to none for ten days. Thanks again!

I did the "green bean diet" with my Gabriel when he got pudgy. It worked for him. Sometimes I would thaw the green beans and sometimes I would just run them under water to wash the ice off and fed them still frozen just to give him something different.
I just bought the cheap Wal Mart brand frozen green beans, unless fresh happened to be in season. Sometimes the fresh were cheaper.
He was eating about five cups a day at the time and begging for more so cutting food down was not an option. i started out subbing one cup a day of kibble for beans and worked up to two cups.
Took him about five months to lose 12 pounds. I like the Holistic Select foods and fed them until I could no longer purchase it locally.
Wishing Koda a smooth and uneventful recovery. Smooches big boy.

My friend with the Basset Hounds uses green beans. In fact I was surprised about the foster Basset. I was involved on his initial transport from the St Louis area to the Vet. He was a BIG guy. My friend then got him as a foster dog. I had to take him to the vet (same as Snuffles) Friday for my friend since she was out of town. I knew he had lost weight. He was like 57 pounds Friday. So I asked the receptionist what he came in to Rescue, and he was 77.

green beans or oatmeal/porridge are quite good towards weight loss. One newf on here had shredded lettuce as a diet aid.

good luck with rehab

cant advise on food as don't know what is available locally
