I did a search and couldn't find any posts too recent on heartworm pills. Currently all of our dogs (Newf & goldens) are on the Heartgard plus pills. We have used this for quite a few years with luckily no problems.

We now have a new vet, our old vet moved away and there are very few to choose from in our area. In fact, we went with our new vet because they are the only practice in our area to offer any type of after hours emergency care (i could do a whole other post on this, lol). So far I like him but I feel like in a lot of fields whenever someone get's a new client they tend to push their latest and greatest products to impress. The new vet is trying to get us to switch to Sentinel. He emphasizes the flea protection and whip worm protection that it has that Heartgard does not. We are very lucky and have not had flea issues for many many years, however Sentinel does nothing for ticks which are a huge problem here, so we would still have to use an additional topical flea/tick treatment. I read that whipworms come from dogs eating/drinking contaminated food/water. I am very careful what my dogs eat and they are never outdoors alone without me.

I tend to follow the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" theory and while I will do anything for my dogs, I am just not sure we need to switch. I guess I just wanted some input/feedback as to what other dog owners are using. Thanks for any comments and/or advice!

I've been using the Heartguard Plus for 12 years and have not had any problems and use a topical tick/flea treatment too. Lyme disease and ticks are prevalent here in New England, so that's why.

I have used the ivermec cattle injectible for years. No problems with it. I used Advantix II for flea/tick. I have never seen a flea but the ticks are horrific here.

I guess all the meds are different over here but Frank Is on Advocate although the monthly thing is pretty hard going not sure I like so many chemicals going in so frequently.

I also use the vermec cattle injectible. The bottle cost about $40. Adam gets .35cc and Chase gets .30cc in the mouth once a month. The bottle usually expires before I use it all. Lasts an average of 2 years. I use frontline every 3 months for fleas since I don't have to worry about tick.

Snuffles started on Heart Guard Plus with his old owner, and I got like 5 doses with him. My first vet put him on Interceptor and used it till Norvatis had all that production problem, so we went back to Heart Guard Plus. Staying on it. I use Frontline Plus also. I do year round treatment. BTW, I have several friends with multiple dogs that use injectable Ivermectin they buy at the Farm Store because it is so cheap in the long run.

We use Trifexis in the winter and Iverheart and Frontline in flea / tick season.

We use Heartgard Plus without problems. I never use a new product with mine until it's been on the market at least 3 to 5 years and even then if what I'm using works I don't change. I also use K9 Advantix for ticks/fleas as where I live there are lots of deer ticks that carry lyme.

We also use the heartgard plus and frontline plus with our pups. Our vet stopped carrying heartgard and went back to a product they used to use that was off the market I guess then came back on, so we have to order from drs foster and smith now.

We have to use flea and tick products and didn't want to double dose on the flea meds using a heart pill and flea control all wrapped up into one.
