Heartworm pill choices

I did a search and couldn't find any posts too recent on heartworm pills. Currently all of our dogs (Newf & goldens) are on the Heartguard plus pills. We have used this for quite a few years with luckily no problems.

We now have a new vet, our old vet moved away and there are very few to choose from in our area. In fact, we went with our new vet because they are the only practice in our area to offer any type of after hours emergency care (i could do a whole other post on this, lol). So far I like him but I feel like in a lot of fields whenever someone get's a new client they tend to push their latest and greatest products to impress. The new vet is trying to get us to switch to Sentinel. He emphasizes the flea protection and whip worm protection that it has that Heartguard does not. We are very lucky and have not had flea issues for many many years, however Sentinel does nothing for ticks which are a huge problem here, so we would still have to use an additional topical flea/tick treatment. I read that whipworms come from dogs eating/drinking contaminated food/water. I am very careful what my dogs eat and they are never outdoors alone without me.

I tend to follow the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" theory and while I will do anything for my dogs, I am just not sure we need to switch. I guess I just wanted some input/feedback as to what other dog owners are using. Thanks for any comments and/or advice!

I too use Heartgard Plus for all of mine and also have a tick problems in our area. I have never had a problem with what I'm using. When my vet quit carrying it, I now get it at petmeds online.
