HANC Draft & Water Workshops (All-Breed/Mix-Breed Welcome) - April 26 & 27, 2014
Land Work (for Water Work) Workshop
Presented by Heart of America Newfoundland Club
Open to All Breeds and Mixed Breeds
Date: Saturday, April 26, 2013
Time: 10:00 am to 4:30 pm
Workshop will start promptly at 10:00.
Please arrive no later than 9:30 so you have time to find a parking spot, potty your dog, pay for the workshop, set up your equipment and get yourself and your dog settled.
Place: The Park at Claircrest
17607 E. 191st Street Pleasant Hill, MO 64080
Cost: $25 per person for Saturday’s Workshop or
$40 for Saturday’s and Sunday’s Workshops
Lunch: Catered lunch is included in the registration fee
WHAT TO BRING:
Your Newfoundland (that you would like to start on water work this summer) with a collar and 6-foot leash. Any age okay. The handler must be able to control their dog.
Crate (required, unless you don’t own one); all participants will be expected to take turns stewarding exercises for each other’s dogs.
Water bowl
Yummy treats (soft dog treats or lean cooked meat; no hard biscuits)
Any of the following water work equipment that you already have:
Canvas, plastic or firehose bumper
Lifejacket for retrieving
Boat cushion for retrieving
Knotted line
If you don’t have the above equipment, the workshop will cover equipment needed. Some equipment will be available to borrow or purchase at the workshop.
Any equipment you would like to introduce to your dog for Senior or Excellent levels.
To start retrieving: a favorite toy or object that your dog LIKES to hold in his mouth.
Long line or retractable leash (in addition to your 6-foot leash)
Pen and notebook, if you want.
WORKSHOP CONTENT
This workshop is designed for both novice and experienced Newfoundland handlers wishing to train their dog Water Rescue exercises. It is designed to help you train your dog the basic water work skills he needs BEFORE you take him to the water this summer. If you spend the month of May training your dog in these skills, then he will have a reasonable chance to earn his water title in one summer. If you haven’t trained these skills, then your dog won’t be ready to start training at the lake this summer.
We will not be teaching you how to train every exercise IN the water, just the building blocks that you can do on land. We will be focusing on all the skills for the NCA Junior Water Dog exercises, plus most exercises for the Senior and Excellent levels
