I just gave the last big chunk of Easter Ham to Sven, my Newf. It had alot of meat left on it so I thought it would take him a while. I went to check on him and he just finished it, bone and all!! I don't know how much he chewed the bone before swallowing. Are they bad? I mean can he digest it?

It will probably come out the other end. Was it really huge?

Most of the time everything will be fine if they swallow a bone. But I know a Ridgeback I walk with at the park who swallowed a relatively small piece of bone and it got lodged inside her. $3000 later she was ok. But it was a major operation with quite a bit of recovery time. They had to get behind her ribs to remove it.

Rory has bones and I'm sure she has swallowed some smallish ones when we aren't looking.

One time Sam got pork chop bone. My vet told me to feed her bread soaked in milk. Said it would soften the stool and help it pass easier. Be sure to keep on the look out for blood in the stool. If you see any get to a vet because a fragment of bone may puncture the intestine.

All the above is true. You can also give Sven Apple Cider Vinegar with mother(unfiltered). It's found in health food stores. Just add a table spoon or 2 to his drinking water. It helps digest things. Believe it or not dogs tend to love the taste of it in their water ??? I give it to my dogs daily because they eat raw bones every day for their meals.

Raw bones are ok but cooked bones are very dangerous, i would call my vet, watch his stools for blood and maybe even xray him.

Well he seems ok so far. I keep listening to his stomach and I still hear good active bowel sounds.

He didn't eat breakfast today---this is normal...he usually just eats once a day, either morning or evening..it's up to him.

Anyway, I took him for a walk tonight and he stopped to poop, not much came out, but it did have some bone in it--- NO BLOOD.

I think I'll just keep an eye on him. I may take him into work and do an x-ray this weekend (I'm a medical x-ray tech).

Thanks guys! I think he'll be fine, he has eaten worse. read: aluminum cans. yes he chewed it and didn't cut his mouth

I'd say about 3" in length and 1.5" in diameter.

Take him in for the Xray for sure. Bone fragments in the stool mean he's going to be passing (if he can) more probably. Keep a close eye on him. If the Xrays show a large piece, take him to the vet with the Xray. I also don't like that "not much came out". Keep on top of this, bowel blockage in dogs is serious. They don't have a lot of bowel.

Keep me posted.

I might also add that with that kind of blockage they can die really fast it is best to be on top of things instead of waiting for the outcome , do the exrays

I would just keep an eye on him and not panic. He sounds like he will be fine. Just watch for blood. If you see none then I would not worry.
