Grooming workshop

I will be conducting a hands on grooming workshop Friday evening. To take part you will need the following.

1. A clean dry combed out newf. (I will have 2 that someone can borrow if you cannot bring your newf)

2. Grooming Table--if you have one. It will make it easier on you. I do have ONE extra table.

3. The following grooming supplies. I have listed the product number as well as the price from pet edge

Greyhound style comb. Medium/course style TP906 $9.99

Pin Brush PS25359 $6.78

Slicker brush (I prefer the mini as it is used on the paws) OF13 $4.29

Thinning Shears 44/20 is a well balanced thinning shear. ZT44200 $99.99 If you want to order a less expensive shear that is ok but be sure to get one with 36 - 46 teeth. Remember you want to get a well balanced comfortable thinning shear as you will be using this shear more than any other tool.

Curved shear 4 1/2" TS5303231 or 4" MF147--this shear is used to trim the pads or any tight place

Straight Shear (Heritage) HC75214 $45.89

Optional: Curved Shear (Heritage) HC75216 $46.49

On the straight or curved shear you can get any price range or brand you want just be sure they are 7 1/2" or 8 1/2" shears. (I prefer the 8 1/2" shear) The better shear you buy the longer they will hold the cutting edge and you will not have to get them sharpened as often. But you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on the straight or curved shear. (I would spend big buck on the thinning shears)

Let me know if you have any questions. If you already have grooming tools that you are comfortable with you may use those. I am just putting this on as a guide so you will know what is needed.

That's pretty funny sounding, actually! ... But seriously Jeannie ... you'd let someone else start whackin' away at your girls (I'm guessing you're talking about Sam and Panda)? I wouldn't want to be the ones who screwed up those coats!

This and the water workshop are the parts I'm going to miss the most ... i so wish I could be there. :(

By the way ... thanks for posting that list of specific stuff ... I'm printing it out for future reference ... I HATE the thinning shears I bought but I spent $50 on 'em so it's not like I can justify going out and buying a new pair ... maybe I can get 'em to break or something!

Ihave a grooming table that hubby made for me, but sadly, Owen has never been up on it. I swore up and down when he was a pup I'd get him used to it so I wouldn't break my back laying on the floor grooming him! Any suggestions on how to get him used to going up on it beofre the get together? Or can I be a freak and groom him on the ground??

Just put him on the table and play with him. give him treats--just get him use to it. Then slowly start asking him to stand and brush him a bit. Don't forget positive reinforcement all the time.

Jeannie,

I just may have Emmy already groomed up before we get there, but I will bring all my grooming tools, including my grooming table. I even have two pair of 44/20 thinning sheers, extra pin brushes, slicker brushes and combs, that people can borrow for the workshop.

This list will be very helpful. Thanks for posting it. I've always groomed Benson on the floor but would like to try doing this on the grooming table. Sure would save on the back.
What would you suggest for a grooming table and how do you get these guys up on them?

You can purchase grooming table with adjustable legs (length) or you can buy a grooming table and just cut the legs off to the length best for you. Or if you have money to spare you could get a hydralic table. Tables sizes vary but usually 24 inches wide by 40-48 inches long. My table is 24 by 48. Most are 24 by 42 for a newf. You will want a LONG arm 48". Do not get one any shorter than that

To get them up--Sam likes to jump onto the table. Panda and Adam put their front paws on the table and I boost their rear ends.

This sounds great Jeannie. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise. I can't wait to learn how to use those shears. Baxter's coat is thick, thick.

I've always groomed the girls on the floor, and find it's much easier for me. I sit on a low rubbermaid stool to work on them. They pretty much go sound asleep, so I just do one side, roll them onto their backs to do their tummies, then roll to the other side, to do it. Generally, I can also clip their nails then, too.

Maggie has never liked to stand for any length of time. If she's still for more than a few seconds, she sits or lies down. I could probably get Lucy to stand on a table, with some practice.
