Grooming Classes

Just out of curiosity does anyone know if there is a grooming class that I could take to help me learn the best way to take care of my Newf to be? I'm in the Atlanta area if that helps. Thanks

Contact you local newf club. Ours has seminars on "Grooming your Newf" which I gave last spring. As far as a school, well schools don't really teach how to groom a newf. My guess it because it can get very detailed. See if a breeder in your area will be happy to show you some tips on grooming too.

Thanks for the info, I'm not having any luck finding a breeder in my area, in fact it looks like my puppy will be coming from Ohio. I'm looking into a club however, never thought about that option. Thanks again!

Jeannie-
I am taking Monty who is 8 months old to a groomer tomorrow. This will be his first time at a groomer. Any suggestions on what I should tell her to do or not to do. I got the name of this groomer from my vet.

Okay this is almost totally OT, but: I had a teddy bear named "Monty" when I was younger and I still love that name so much! Also, my Newfy Ese is 8 months old.
Please tell us how the grooming experience goes.

I'm glad you like Monty's name. We had a hard time comming up with a name and I really don't remember how we settled on Montgomery.
Anyway I'll let you know how the grooming experince goes. I'm a little worried since Monty gives me a hard time when I comb him. Hope he behaves for the groomer.

I hope I am not too late to give advice here. How old is your pup. I will not groom any dog until they have had ALL their puppy shot. Puppies can get sick so easily. Did the grooming shop ask to see a copy of your Vaccination paper?? I would not take my dog to any groomer that didn't ask for proof of vaccinations. If they don't ask I feel they are not very worried about spreading diseases. Hence, they are not very concerned about the welfare of your dog.

Ok so they asked for proof of vaccinations. When you get there check the salon to see how clean it is. Check things like--the clipper blades--can spread lots of skin problems if they don't keep clipper blades clean. SNIFF does it smell clean??? (My shop is in my basement and believe me it does not smell like dog) Check the bath--do they have a variety of shampoos so they can determine the best for your dog or do they just have an old stand by they use. Look at the other dogs--do they seem happy or afraid? If you cannot tour the grooming shop--I would walk out--maybe they are hiding something and will use the excuse "we don't allow customers in the grooming area". Well, I allow customers in any part of my shop. If they want to see I give them a tour. I show them everything.

The first groom should not consist of much. Lots of time for a first groom I just bath and clean the private areas, clip the nails and clean ears. If the dog does not seem stressed I will do more. Remember this is a new experience for your puppy and it needs to be made a HAPPY, FUN time so he/she will enjoy grooming in the future. For a newf, if the pup responds well to bath, nails, ears and complete drying. I would do no more than clip the hair on the paw and ears. Remember not get the dog stressed. Even if you have to take him back in 2 weeks it is better than to stress them. I have many customers that insist I do a complete groom on a puppy. I tell them I will do however much the puppy can tolerate. If they don't like it I won't groom the puppy. Remember Puppy comes first NOT how pretty mom or dad wants puppy to look. I have this line in my brochure I give all my customers. "It may take a few grooms to get that prefectly polished look."

Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

Jeannie - your message came too late. The grooming was a disaster. I just picked up Monty and he is stressed out. He was there for over 6 hours. I feel terrible about what I put him through. The groomer came highly recommened. He looks great but he was really thisty when I got him home. And he is limping. He hurt his paw last night and it seemed better but now he is limping. My husband is mad at me for getting him groomed and stressing Monty out and I could kick myself for putting Monty through this ordeal. I forgot to tell you Monty is almost 9 months old. I just wanted him to have a bath and be trimmed and cleaned up a little.
Needless to say I won't take Monty back there. I will do his grooming from now on. I am so upset over what I put him through. I can't even put into words how horrible I feel. I keep asking myself why did I do this.
Thanks for listening

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, Annette. I know nothing about grooming, but I do know what a disappointment it is when you try to do things right and they turn out wrong. I'm sure Monte will be fine now that he's home. You shouldn't feel guilty since you used a groomer that was recommended and you had the best intentions.

I am so sorry to hear of the terrible experience your newf had
So many groomers are good with small dogs, but have no patience or knowledge to groom a big dog. I am the only groomer in town that will groom a large dog. Although I will not do Chow Chows or sharpei (too mean)or Huskies (or any alaskian dog-too hard for me to groom.)

I bet she didn't book out enough time to properly groom your newf and had to hurry. Hurrying makes for a very stressful unpleasant groom. Anytime I have a newf I do it in the afternoon and no other dogs at all. Poor Monty. I wish everyone lived close by so I could groom your newfs. By the way what did you pay for your groom? Just being nosey. I usually charge a mininum of $100 for a newf.

If you need any advise on grooming feel free to ask. I will try to help all I can.

Jeannie - Thank you for your concern. The groomer charge me only $53. But money was not my concern. I would gladly pay more for a good grooming experince.

Your were right, she booked too many dogs. When I made the appointment she gave me the impression she would only be doing Monty. As we were leaving I saw other people bringing in their small dogs. I should have went back in and took Monty home. But I didn't. I could kick myself.

The good news is that Monty is much better today. He has had alot of TLC from myself and my five sons.

I wish you lived closer so you could groom Monty. My breeder is about 3 hours from here and my husband suggested taking her up on her offer to groom Monty. Since you are too far, the breeder is the only place I would take him. For now I will ask you any questions I have on grooming (and other things). Again Thanks for the input and concern. Annette
