GPS collars?

Does anyone have one of those GPS trackers that attach to the dogs collar? I saw one in the magazine our pups insurance sends. Are dogs are only outside when we are outside with them. It would be kind of pointless but being the worry wort I am and imagining the worse and if they just took off in the woods after something and I lost sight of them it would be nice to have. Its not extremely expensive and couldn't hurt. Just wondering if anyone had one.

No, but I'm interested in them as well. Jax has access to the backyard via doggy door when I'm at work. I worry that he'll escape. One of the features that interests me is setting an area that if he leaves, I'll get an alert (text or email).

Yes I like that feature as well.

Just remember the GPS collar only tells you where the dog, it does not help keep them in a specific area. I know hunters use them to help track their scent hounds.

Yes I know. I want it just incase of an emergency. We had a neighboor who had her pitbull run off her couple acre wooden property. And was stolen. We thought someone in the area took her. And come to find out she was being starved to be a bait dog. My neighboor brought in tracker dogs. We knew someone in our area took her. And lucky for her some one saw the tracker company truck driving around the neighborhood got scare and dropped her off on her back step. So if for some weird reason I lose sight of my two I can find them before someone else does.

Sounds like they are a good fit for you then. Just make sure the batteries are always charged. :)

I would really try to find reviews of the specific product online before you purchase. I read an extensive review on apps like that for parents with their kids -- gps tracking via the child's phone. First of all, for a dog, the device has to be durable, waterproof, somehow be able to keep charged while sending out messages of it's location constantly .... and the issue with the apps was that some didn't really help pinpoint the location of the child very well.

It sounds like a great idea, I'd be careful and do research to make sure it actually works.

I know the GPS device is water proof. Thanks for the idea about asking how accurate the gps coordinates are.

Would love to know more also. More than once Maneen and Gracie took off on me and it was amazing how many miles they could cover at a good trot before we found them again.
