Get Together dog manners question

I know many of you go to dog parks so you can probably answer this......
With all the dogs that will be there how do you make sure everyone will get along and there are no doggie wars?

If you go to a particular park consistently you will get to know the regulars. you'll figure out pretty quickly which dogs are not nice (even though their owners swear they've never acted like that before), which owners are not nice and of course who the conscienscious owners are. The big thing is to keep an eye on your dog at all times to make sure that she is not hurting others or behaving inapropriately or being acted upon.

Oh yeah...and just assume there is one idiot there at all times!

becouse mine are intact they wont be allowed to run off lead, only in the water.
i am a party pooper, but it is better to be safe than sorry esp with that many purdy girls running around.
LOL

99% of the time all it takes is one serious growl or a well-aimed air bite to settle any differences between the furpeople in the park, then they get along great. It's important to remember not to leash your dog if the other dogs are off lead, as it your dog will feel unable to defend itself properly and may act unNewfmanlike. I usually stand by and wait to see if they work it out, then intervene only when necessary. Good luck.

Mine have no problem being on leash around unleashed dogs.
that is not always true.
mine will be leashed.

mine have never been to a dog park, my fault, i dont trust, to many idiots running around with ill trained dogs. ;)
P.S.
i would think that around the campers and lake that they will be required on lead?
no? yeah?
and the off leash play area just that?
if so mine wont be in the play area.
it is early yet! so we wont worry bout it!

Dogger,

I am sorry, but, did I miss something? You said you had "one dog taken from me".
What happened? Please forgive me if you don't want to go into the specifics.

Was this a recent situation?

Or just pm me if you would.

Thanks,

Sue

As mine will be a pup and obviously not reliably trained, he will be on lead when not in the water. And even then probably on a long line unless there is a tangle hazard.

Now all that said, I hope like crazy that I have my pup by then.
Hope with me you guys.

Madison and Walt are excellent off leash and make me very proud. Then there is little Bart......  He is a holy terror! As long as there is a totally fenced in area, I'm happy to let Bart off lead for a good romping and playing with the other dogs. He would never run away from us, but he has been a real challenge in the obedience area and he does not have a clue as to the meaning of the word "heel." I'm regularly dragged down the street by one heck of a strong puppy. Max is very reliable when off leash, but he tends to follow his nose, and will wander without meaning to. Because he is soooo slow anyway, we have never had a problem redirecting his nose back in our direction.

I'm sure that all the dogs there will be of mixed temperament, age, obedience and dog socialization levels. It seems like Jeannie and Gary's property is large enough to accomodate all kinds, as long as we are all honest about when and where each individual dog should and shouldn't be let off leash.

Another thing with my puppy Bart - he tends to play very aggressivley. Those days when we drive to the dog park instead of walking him to the dog park present real challenges. So I can honestly tell you that my loving little dog Bart will only be off leash playing with other dogs after Allan or I have given him a good long walk to take his excited edge off. If we release him in a dog park without exercising him a little bit first - he is like the hound from hell!

See my 3 have done off leash walks JoJo and Maggie are good about coming back when called Tily well Tily just does what Tily is doing then gets around to coming back....so no off leash walks with her. At Jeanies being all fenced in I wouldnt worry about her wandering off or into a moving car or something.
My concern (ok paranoia) is two dogs get into a hissy fit and all of a sudden we have 180 snarling hounds!!!

my concern would be getting hurt, (yes you all know i am paranoid about that and overprotective)
i would be a horrible mommy to my own human children if i ever had any!
LOL
i cant afford for them to be hurt, in puppy class tonight hadley got to romp on leash with a gorgous corgi pup, and 2 poodle pups and others, but when it came time for off leash, there were to many there that pounced and had "tendancy" to be a bit ruff, being that the floor is cement under rubber matting that is paper thin, i did not want her to go down hard on an elbow and injur herself, she gets plenty of socializing in our yard on mother earth with other dogs to.
not just my own.
so my caution for my own newfs would be getting hurt, hormones getting charged and a bit of competition, one never knows. etc....
i just hope that i will be busy by the water, so much so helping or otherwise that i wont have time to think of the offleash area! LOL ;)

Just a reminder that the area is completely fenced so the dogs cannot get away or taken. Whether you let you dog run loose or leash it is strictly up to you

However, the same rules will apply as for the dog park. If any dog is aggressive toward another dog or person that dog must be kept leashed.

As a general rule newfs get alongwell in large numbers, the thing i worry about is the excitement and level of play, LOL
if you have intact animals, challenging each other, that is where i might worry, so far mine have gotten along with every dog they meet, except a rotty here and there with a very strong personality, or other breeds that might show aggresion.
for instance, at agility there is a BC, it is a very insecure animal, watching her interact she doesnt know her place, her smile at first i thought was just that, but it was not, she kept turning to look at penny, and the smile was there, and a half mast tail wag, penny tried and tried to make friends thru the whole class, towards the end of class the BC challenged her baring teeth, and of course penny stood her ground.
that is the type of thing i would worry about.....
examples such as that.

Since most of you don’t know who I am or Moose I guess I should start by telling you all Moose is not a Newfie He is a Great Pyrenees. Thus “The only white Newfie” in SCNC.
We have been a member of the dog park here in Indianapolis since it opened 4 years ago and what I have found with most of the dogs that go there. they all get along fine. Even the ones who are protective of their home they are not that way at the dog park. This is because it is neutral territory they all seam to play and get along. This is why off lead parks work. Don’t get me wrong there have been times when some ones has be a “poop-e- head “ dog as well as some people. But for the most part everyone gets along fine.
As for Moose he will not be off lead unless he is in a fenced area and I am with him at all times.

So, are you saying he acts like a pyr then? I will never forget trying to take my pyr stormy through obedience. the recalls were not fun.

Re-call what’s that --- oh yes, that is when he is suppose to come when he is call ---- right !!! That is when he has to look around for imaginary butterflies and forgets his name. “Moose, Moose who!!!! There is no one named Moose here”.
We did one obedience show. As soon as I took him off lead he went to check out the “ fur bunnies” on the floor. The judge as me if we had took any classes and suggested we night want to take a whole lot more.
But he is a good boy and the love of my life --- before my husband --- no that’s not right it’s suppose to be after my husband.
By all I was suppose to be home a hour ago ill catch up on Monday --- thank- you for letting me join you all. Someday we will get a Newfie.
