Does anyone else have a problem with this...........Every month religiously, I apply the Frontline on our Dog's..Now Effie has no problem in the area we apply it..-between the shoulder blades-.We apply it the same way on August, separate the fur down to the skin, and then apply.....BUT with him, for some reason, the area where we apply, his fur will clump into a BIG KNOTT...ending in us having to cut it off....what can we do?.does anyone else have this problem, how can Effie not have a problem, but then August does?....There fur isn't that different, apart from August's being a little coarser...Is there anywhere else on his skin we can apply, instead of the shoulder blades?...Help I don't want a Landseer with a big chunk cut out of his mane every month!!

I spread it all the way down the center of the back.

To avoid the clumping why don't you just comb the area. Surely you can comb it before it mats so bad you have to cut it out.

BTW if you are only treating for fleas and not ticks frontline only has to be applied every 3 months.

I put some between the shoulder blades, some in the middle of the back, and some right at the base of the tail. They can't reach any of those areas with their mouths.

I think you may be getting too much on one spot in the fur and not on the skin. Make a part and "line" it on directly on the skin. It's best with the dog standing up. A thin line in each of the areas above works well.

Check the next day for any clumping and comb through.

That is exactly how we put it on,directly on the skin! (apart from the 3 area's)...He gets combed every night with Effie, and like I said Effie does not have the problem, we do it the exact same way on both dog's!!!
It is almost like this clump appears over night, as the clump appears into the second week after application, and it is always where we apply the frontline.....I'm just baffled as to how even after brushing, it will suddenly appear!.and this month I was real careful to watch the area

Jeannie.we are in a BIG tick area, so we have to do it every month!
Donna thanks. Next month I will spread it into the three area's...or maybe spread it between two area's as August can reach the top of his backside!!!!

After you have let it set in on his skin/fur, then use some Johnson's baby detangler, the spray on kind. Spray it on the area where you applied the frontline.

There are also a lot of detangling products out there for dogs. I would use one of those before I would cut a chunk out of his back. I use Chris Christensen Ice on Ice, but several on here have mentioned Cowboy Magic and several others. Just curious - if you are combing EVERY night - how does this mat form?

Not sure on your emphasis on EVERY....but That is what is so darn puzzling to us!!!
.as I said I had been watching the area, and just don't understand!.......I will try the detangle stuff around the frontline area.. we have a couple of different brands, which we use religiously but they don't work a lick behind the ears....I don't want to bathe too much....As I don't believe in bathing the dog's too often, as IMO, it's not good for there natural oils and coat.

could it be a hotspot forming under the fur? those will create a spot like you describe in the fur...

Skylar seems to get the same thing, but not bad enough to shave out. Bull's fur seems to handle it fine. After about a week, I give skylar a bath and after that all seems fine. For some reason it "dirties" the white in that area and just plain feels yucky until she is washed.
