I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human
society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and
betrayal.

And I was angry. "God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do
something?" God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly.

"I have done something," He replied. "I created You."

That reminds me of the saying,"Without suffering, there would be no compassion"
Thank God for compassionate people like you who give them a second chance!!!

I'm crying right now because literally 2 minutes ago I received a serious application on the newfie puppy we have been fostering. I'm so so sad to give him up. We've only had him since Sunday, and we're in love. I have not even been able to post pictures of him yet.

Seeing this message just gave me the strength to go forward and process the application and hand him over to some great family for his forever home.

MJ,

I know exactly how you are feeling. We have been contacted by a family we met in Ellicottville... they are in love with Sabrina. I hate the thought of her being so far away. I get attached more and more every day. She's started playing catch with Russell... which is a huge improvement for her. My throat gets tight every time I think about saying goodbye to her.

Yet, I have to focus on what's best for her. If we adopted her, we'd be out of the fostering business. It's a hard choice, yet, there are so many Newfs in need out there.

Bless you for fostering... and for helping with Rescue....

Thanks Annie. It's really tough. My fiance was totally against fostering because he was convinced we would end up with 25 dogs, since I would be unable to give any of them up.

But now that this application came in (the only one we have taken even remotely seriously), its he who suggested that we should just keep little Bart.

We're going to move forward and find him a great home. It's funny how the tables turned. As much as it hurts, I ended up being the strong one here able to give him to a good family:) Men!

I'll get some pictures of him with my dogs tonight, and post them tomorrow.

Thanks again. His rescuers were definitely put here to give him a good life. Thanks for this post.

Annie - I wish you a lot of luck with placing Sabrina. She seems like a wonderful dog. I'm sure she will miss you, but she will also bring good memories along to her new family. Does the family you are considering have other dogs? Since she is so used to being a member of your own pack, maybe it would be comforting to her to have other dogs in her new home. mj

Alexmaddy,

I know how hard it is to place a foster. It is a bitter sweet moment when they leave. The most important thing (I think) is to let the dog know it is OK to go. When Patty came to get Chance I was so sad. But Chance was so happy with Patty. HE let ME know it was ok. Patty must have bought out the doggie toy store. I helped Chance into her Blazer, looked at all the toys, pick one up, laid down and looked at me as if to say "Ok I am happy. This is where I belong". Of course you will shed a few tears because we love them so. But what makes it worth while is the next newf down the road that you can help foster. Then is just starts all over again.

Jeannie, Annie, Alexmaddy and all of the others of you that are newfie rescue Moms, you truely have to be the very special few in the world, to do what you do
It is fairly easy to buy a Newfie pup, there is nothing really hard about it. But when you take in a Newfie Rescue or foster-home a Newf, you have "saved" him from being in a cage in a shelter, your beleiving he is worthy of a wonderful life, he becomes a part of a family again, and he becomes the great Newf he was born to be, because of people like you
you open your homes and hearts with LOVE, and bring back the sparkle in their eyes. And after you have established a wonderful bond with these Newfs, they are ready for their for-ever homes. It really is "Bitter-Sweet". Personally, I think anybody can be a Newf Breeder, and be good at it, but what you do for the Newf Breed, is priceless.
You are, what I call the "Ultimate Devotion" to the Newfoundland Breed. ;)

Laurene,

Thank you for the kind words. Rescue is the most rewarding thing I've ever had the priveledge to be part of. While it has it's ups and downs, just knowing that one more newf is out of a horrid situation, and now in a good one makes it all worth while. It's just like the "Legend of the Starfish". If you guys haven't ever heard of that, let me know and I'll post it here.

MJ,

You are so right about Sabrina and other dogs. If it hadn't been for "our" own dogs, I am convinced that Sabrina would not have made the progress she has. She takes comfort from them, and learns from them. Russell & I are comitted to placing her in a home that has dogs, for that very reason. If they don't have a dog, then Sabrina isn't the Newf for them.... and that's ok, because Lord knows, there are plenty of other Newfs out there looking for a forever home.

Thanks Laurene, Annie and Chestersnewfiemom. This is my first foster and it is really hard. Not hard to love, train and take care of the puppy, but hard to think about giving him up. I only hope I don't scare away his new family with the Gestapo-like questioning and home inspection I have planned!
