Feeding the Newf

Okay, I have been away from the breed for quite awhile so please refresh me:

How much do Newfies (male and female, if there's a difference) eat per day? Also, what do you recommend feeding to this breed? I currently feed my dogs Nutro Natural Choice Chicken and Rice and/or Lamb and Rice...what do you think of this food?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I wasn't paying attention

Gracie gets about 1 and a half to 2 cups twice a day with treats in between. She also likes to skip meals. grrrrr
She's fed Nutro Lamb and Rice, though I personally want to change foods. The problem is finding a good food around here. (remember they stopped carrying Wellness) I don't think males and females differ in the amount catagory.
Gracie gains a few pounds in the winter, but she doesn't get fat. Just a laying of insulation ; )
And she loses it in the summer.

Oh thanks so much for the reply Elizabeth! I also feed Nutro; I have fed the Lamb abd Rice and also the Chicken and Rice.....do you think the Large Breed formula is as good, too? ;)

Growing up with Newfs, we fed them frozen Bil-Jac...too expensive for me to feed with the amount they eat but maybe I could add some Bil-Jac to the Nutro?

I wouldn't feed the large breed formula personally. Is Bil-Jac frozen the raw food?
If so you won't get an ok from me, I don't feed raw meat and never will

Newfs really don't eat anymore than any other large dog, lab, golden, ect.
When they're growing they do, but not as adults.
You know about feeding puppy food too right?

Just in case you're interested, Bil-jac also makes a dry kibble. They may have a website. If you have a Petsmart in your area, I think they carry it.

Yup, Bil-Jac frozen is raw I believe. I'll have to look up their ingredients. I do know that they make a dry kibble too, thanks, although I remember not being as impressed with it as the Nutro. By-products in it for one thing. ;)

Oh and thanks for the tip about the Large Breed formula; I feel the same way about it, just wanted to get a second opinion. ;)

Angus was skipping breakfast, so I contacted our breeder. Was feeding him 3cups ProPlan Chicken&Rice, as she said this was closest to the formula she uses in Canada for her dogs. He was eating 3 cups each, a.m. and p.m., but he's a very large pup (8 1/2 mo.,110 lb). She lets the dogs self-feed, as long as they're not pigs, and her dogs are very big,but lean and fit. So she said if he's cutting back, let him and just be sure he's not pigging out on snacks. So it's 2 cups twice a day, unless he's extremely hungry. hope this helps the discussion. Anne

We're about to pick up some Eagle Mountain food for Tika. We just bought a HUGE bag of the Eukanuba Large Puppy dog food and then decided to buy this other food instead. There's not much of a price difference and the Eagle Mountain looks a lot better. I suggest you check it out.

Hi Anne,
with puppies you feed a lower protein food, not puppy food. We want them to grow slower with less of a chance of contracting joint problems.
I fed Eukanuba large breed puppy and Nutro lamb and rice when Gracie was a pup. At 6 months I went to straight Nutro. No joint problems and she grew nice and slow. Her lines were slow anyway, and she was pretty much done growing by age 3. I believe the head is the last to develope.

Texas, can you provide some info about Eagle Mountain food (website or ingredients)? I'm familiar with Eagle, aka EaglePack products but have not heard of Eagle Mountain and would like to know more.

Luca is a self feeder he eats when he wants. we feed him calif natural large breed dog food....our breeder told us never ever feed a newf puppy food.....also only feed with certain amoutns of fat and protien...eukenubra was on the no no list....puppy food triggers growth and these big boys need to grow on thier own...thats why puppy food is a nono.....must be working luca is 9 1/2 months and right around 125 lbs......

Oops. It is actually called Eagle Pack. Sorry. All the same, it is what we plan to feed Tika. We had to special order it through a Natural Foods store about 23miles away.

I have talked with Iams at length on what is the proper food to feed my Newf puppy. Iams says the large breed puppy formula is absolutely the best type of food to feed. They claim that test over the years have shown that the large breed formula slows the growth process on puppies without inhibiting the final adult size. The slow growth process is necessary to prevent the skeleton from developing faster the the muscles and tendons can support. I also consulted my vet and he agreed.

It is hard to know what to do with different breeders and so called experts telling you different things.
