Feeding guides

Hi there

I was just hoping that someone could offer me a bit of advice on feeding. I am a first time newfie owner and want to get things right. We've got great breeders, Gus is a shermead - but they just don't give me a solid answer, just if the dog seems to be doing well then he's doing alright sort of thing, so I guess I looking for somebody to say yeah that's what we're feeding ours.. Anyways Gus is going to be 6 months this saturday, we've just dropped the feed to 2 times a day now, each feed being 15oz a total of 30 oz a day, is this too much or does the little guy need more? From this age upwards how should the feeding be worked out, should we increase it, decrease it or keep it the same? He weighs 38 kg and looks good to us, we're always checking his ribs, ie can feel them but not see them, he gets a few doggy biscuits a days for training and maybe a carrot now around lunchtime. I know it's a hard subject to give a solid answer to, I just want someone with a male to say we fed ours this much at this age...etc, I guess just a bit of reassurance... Many thanks Lawrence

Lawrence,
I would guess that you haven't gotten the answer you are looking for cause there really isn't a set in stone rule. When you drop down to 2x a day feeding I would still be giving the the same amount as was the total for the 3x. In other words divide in half what he was getting and that is what he should bet for the 2x a day. My 11mo puppy, a female, would eat until she was sick if i let her. She is the first newf that I have had that is that food motivated. She is my 4th newf. My adult newf that is with us right now, could care less. Although since Koko has been here she at least eats all of her food in one sitting. I think the standard guideline for wieght in a pup is about 10lbs per month for the first year. Sometimes it's a little more sometimes a little less. My suggestion would be not to worry so much. :) Judi Adlers book about raising newfs, and I can't see the title right now, has some good guidelines. Good luck and your puppy is very lucky to have a home where his humans are so good about wanting to make sure he is healthy. Enjoy!!

Lawrence, Chuck has it right on the mark. The amount you feed each Newf depends on their activity level and metabolism. I have one who will get skinny if I give her 3 cups at each meal and another who's on a diet and getting one cup. You have to keep a watch on your boy's weight. As you know, you should be able to feel his ribs, but not TOO prominently. He should also have a waist, that tuck-up behind his ribcage. Don't worry if he always seems hungry. Newfs have patented the "I haven't eaten in 28 years and I'm DYING of hunger!!!" look.
Don't worry! You'll both be fine!

LOL Lynne, you've described that hungry look to a tee! Sometimes I think they practice that look while we are not home...oh and don't forget that big heavy sigh complete with flopping themselves down and making sure you see them when they don't get a treat! My mother babysat my son for me yesterday while I was at work and she fed my newfs their dinner. She gave them each a total of almost 4 cups of food each for dinner. I couldn't believe it. They get a total of 4 cups each a day..not at each meal. We feed them twice a day.

Hi there

Thanks everyone for all the advice - I think Gus seems to be doing fine on the amount of feed, it may sound stupid but what is the measurement in grams or ounces of a 'Cup of food, that was mentioned in some of the replies. Everyone thanks again, hope all your newfies are doing well..

Thanks Annie

Thanks for the advice I just wanted to know if the cup refered to was a dog cup, ie the ones let's say you get with Eukanube feed. Thanks again.
