Drum Roll Please!!

I just returned from Adam's first show. Actually there were 2 shows in 2 days. Adam won the puppy class each day, but I guess that was really nothing to get excited about because he was the only one in his class. But I was told the judge does not have to award the blue ribbon if the dog does not meet the breed standard.

I got to meet several new newfie friends as well as catch up with old friends I have not seen in awhile. There were some newf people there that were judges. They all loved Adam. They said he had a good front end, good angle, nice bone and beautiful face. OH if I only knew what all that meant. SCNC is hold a conformation seminar in 2 weeks, I cannot wait so I can learn learn learn.

All in all we had a wonderful time. Annie thanks for coming by!! Darlene and Kira (Yelda) went with me. Kira was a perfect lady the whole weekend. She is such a wonderful girl!!

Question: Some people said to show Adam quite a bit while he is young to show him a lot to get him use to showing. Then lay off awhile--until he matures then start back again. Others said to show him only a little, then start showing more as he matures. What does everyone on this board think of that?

So one more show I have entered in. Next weekend in Lebanon IN. Susan (Newfvo) are you going to be there???

i would show him until he is going thru the 12-18 or slightly more month ages, as much as you can, no matter, i have found it helps them just to get them out there.
it helps you also if you have not shown before or if you are just starting, you can have someone stand ringside to let you know wich gait is looking best for him during the growth stage he is in at present time.
once they hit the year old stage, they are pretty much in with the filled out more mature adults, and it is real obvious depending on lines, that that chest needs to come in and drop.
happy to hear you had a good time, BTW how is sara doing?

Congratulations Jeannie!

Not being of the show world, I have no advice. Just words of encouragement.

I agree with sar. No one really expects wins from the puppy class, so while it can get expensive, getting him socialized to the feel of shows from a young age is a great idea. Then, when he is old enough to be with the big boys, but not a big boy himself, I'd wait till he looks a little more mature.

Are you showing him yourself?

Congrats, Jeannie and Adam! :D What the Newf people said about nice front, good angles, etc. is all good! It's also great to have friendly faces there to cheer you on...helps chase the jitters away.

I agree with Sar. Enter Adam as much as your schedule and wallet will allow. Since fees to enter for puppy class are usually less than regular classes, now is a good time to get in all the experience and practice you can. Just make sure that you are both enjoying it. If it becomes stressful and more like work than fun, take a break. Make it a good and fun experience for both of you, and it will pay off later.

I know there will be a couple of SCNC people entered in the Lebanon shows next weekend, so you'll be in good company. Emmy is not entered, but I just may have to come down to watch and cheer you all on. We'll also see you in two weeks at the seminar. Good luck!

Congrats Jeannie! You made it through your first show weekend with flying colors!! By all accounts, Adam and his handler did just fine.

I agree with getting in as much ring time in the puppy classes as you can and then putting the dog up until he is ready to be competitive. Just remember to enjoy yourself!

I am leaving for the Frenchie Nationals in Indy on Wednesday with the little French Fries and will be heading up to finish the weekend at the Lebanon shows. I can't to see you boy in the flesh!

As a side note, what a difference between breeds (Frenchies and Newfies)and how they mature. My Newfie boys aren't really ready to be competitive until they are 4 years old. This weekend my 10 month old Frenchie boy, Crosley took Best of Breed from the classes and went on to a Group 4 and a Group 3 at the shows you were at this weekend Jeannie. Go figure!

Annie,

We looked and looked for you. We found Susan's van, walked around, went back to our van then Susan's van, walked around some more. Then we left, went to eat, the park and back to the hotel. I was bummed that we could not find ya'll.

LOL! We were like 2 ships passing in the night... we pretty much did the same thing, but we did go inside the school to visit the ladies room... which was much nicer than using the porta-potties that were scattered all over!

Jeannie! Congratulations for you and Adam!

That's a wonderful start. Just wondering if you can post any pics of him in the ring? Would be great to see him! Do you groom him for the shows yourself?
