Dogs and air travel?

I have flown my dogs all over the world. All I can say is lots of planning is the key and working with the airlines every step of the way. I see you are Down Under. From where to where are you planning?

From what I understand international regulations mandate 3 inches of clearance from the top of pups head to the carrier when s/he is sitting. How big is your baby?

Can you guys fly direct? I've read some scary stories about complications with connecting flights. (Nothing lethal, just the dog not getting on the second flight and noone getting contacted. And it taking forever to get worked out.)

Yes, I'm in OZ at the moment but will be relocating to Canada in about a years time. The thing is that I've heard so many horror stories about pets and air travel I just don't know what to really think anymore and it's really beginning to worry me. Any advice in so far as planning goes and anything you could tell us to possibly put our minds more at ease would be greatly appreciated.

Can you fly Northwest? I've heard good things about their dog service. (Dog sitters and the like.)

Ok, I imagine not a lot of direct flights that far....

Hi,
I'm in Victoria. BC (west coast) A Labrador breeder here has imported several Lab puppies from Sydney Australia with no problems. I think she has used Quantas airline. The puppies have arrived just fine. Extremely long journey but no problems.

No, I can't really use North West, or Quantus for that matter, for a direst flight to Canada I have to use Air Canada as they are the only airline that flies direct. I mean I could go the US then Canada but that's more stops/transfers and from what I've heard the less stops and transfers the better!

It does make me feel a little better that people here have known, or have flown animals themselves that far and have had no problems. Like I said, any advice is helpfull...

Make sure you check with Air Canada to make sure that the type of plane that flys from that area allows pets in cargo. We tried to ship a pup from Western Canada...with a change in Toronto and then on to NY. The planes that they used for that flight did not have any heat in the cargo so would not allow live animals. We had to use another airline.

I would also be very careful about coming across the Pacific from OZ in 1 hop. A six hour flight is a lot different stress on the dog than a 12 hour flight. Your vet can help with a mild sedative but just remember that the dog will have severely restricted mobility during this period. Be attentive to multiple water and food sources.

Yes, I worry about the length of the trip, but there's really not much that can be done about it. All in all the flight from Melb to Van is about 20 hrs if I remember, with an hour or so stop in Honalulu. The problem is that we wouldn't be allowed to stop because of quatentine issues anyways. In so far as sedating your dog, I thought that it was recommended by mosts vets these days that you don't sedate your dog at all when flying?

hmmm i was just thinking.. Race Horses are shipped all over the world with little problem.. these horses are big money, maybe u can give a call to one of the race tracks in OZ to find out who the owners use.. or a stable that races international.. there might even be an "agent" u can get in touch with that can help you.
