Hi my sister said that she feed Misty purina dog chow (not my brand but okay, well I finished that bag and started a new one. At first I didn't think much about it, then I noticed her stools where alittle loose. Then Murrie decided to try Mistys kibble. And oh mh gosh, NEVER again. I have never seen so much yuck. Is this normal or does this brand of food not agree with my dogs? And can I just switch Misty over to Natures Choice? I don't know if I can deal with that again.

I think you'll find that most here don't use brands that contain corn, wheat or soy.

Purina dog chow is just not good food. It's loaded with the three ingredients above, and it has a lot of dangerous chemicals (as preservatives). It's also one of the foods that uses rendered meats. You might want to research that on Google...it's truly disgusting.

I'd definitely switch her...definitely.

I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with Nature's Choice? There's a Natures Recipe, and a Nutro Natural Choice....

Who makes Nature's Choice?

Sorry, I am not familiar with Nature's Choice either...Where do you buy that?
You might check the availability of any of the premium foods in your area--Eagle Pack, Canidae, Merrick, Timberwolf, Chicken Soup, Van Patten's, Nutro, etc, there are many more.
Avoid wheat and corn, as Donna said...Look for foods that are preserved naturally.
Pet Food Direct is a good website to go to to look at different foods...they carry many and list the ingredients and protein counts for most.

I'm sorry it's called Natural Choice ny Nutro. I guess if I had looked at the bag correctly. I get it at Petco. I will never feed the girls that crap again. YUCK.

Many people on this list feed the Nutro Natural Choice. It is a good food that has no corn or by-products.

Over the years and 5 dogs, I've treid them all and find that I'ms which has no corn, is best for our dogs with no residual problems.
Our pup, our first at such a young age, loves some odd stuff like grapes and strawberries.
He's now 7 months and is on Iams Smert Puppy and is thriving at 3 meals a day.

At what point can I stop feeding him 'lunch' (dry only)????

Sure would appreciate your thoughts.

Ours did well on the Large Breed Adult Nutro. I had to switch them recently as there is none where we live now.

Btw all the "Smart Puppy" from Iams does indeed have corn. Corn meal and corn grits. Go to their website and click on ingredients for the food. I looked at all 3 Smart Puppy foods and all contained one or both.

At seven months, you can definately switch him to two meals a day. I cut out the middle meal at about four or five months of age. How many cups is he getting in total? You may be able to just cut the middle meal entirely or add a little of it to the morning meal and a little of it to the evening meal. Lets see, for the kibble portion of the meal, Bartlett gets seven cups a day split between two meals. And Bax gets six cups a day split between two meals for his kibble portion.

I think about five to seven cups split between two meals is about average.

By the way, all of the Iams puppy formulas has corn as either the second or third igredient.

I'm NOT defending Purina Dog Chow as a good food, but I did want to point out that any food can give a dog diarrhea when it's introduced too fast.
If you suddenly change foods, even the best food in the world can cause tummy problems.
Change foods slowly, and give the new food time for the dog to get used to it before deciding if it's right for her. Some foods that are wonderful for 90% of dogs might be wrong for your dog, but you can't tell by suddenly switching and then thinking the food caused the problem, when it was really the rapid switch.

I sell Nutro and Precise. The Nutro is a big seller for dogs that have skin problems. I personally feed Precise. It does have wheat but no animal fat only poultry fat, started my sweeties on this years ago (before I knew about Nutro) and never seen a need to change.

berryann, you are so right! Any food when quickly changed can cause a lot of internal issues. In the best possible route, most times just 7 days to switch over.

ditto what Jenn said. But, if she's already getting severe diarrhea from the food (if it IS the food) then I think that fasting for a day, then feeding boiled chicken or turkey or hamburger (pour off the oily water), and steamed rice for a day or two should help that part. Then start mixing in the Nutro with the rice mixture for a while might work.

Oh and one thing that hasn't been mentioned, which may be part of the problem is to have her throroughly checked by the Vet for parasites...like coccidia and worms. That could also cause diarrhea.

Stick with the Nutro ... she'll be much better off.

Hope she's doing better now!

I'd be very careful with grapes. Our vet, and several others on this site, have said that grapes can be toxic to a dog. Grapes - and raisins...
I also agree that Iam's has corn....

Thanks for the caution about grapes - when cleaning our yard last week, our son-in-law proclained that there must be some wild animal in out fenced in yard as there was undigested grapes in the dog's stool.. So, I have cut out the grapes. Also have cut Panda back to 2 meals a day -7 cups worth and we're suviving despite the sad looks.

I also agree with berryann and Ardea.... I think that switching foods so quickly is bound to create an intestinal upset. I'd fast my dog for a day, and then feed bland meals of either scrambled egg & rice OR boiled ground beef and rice for a day or so.... then I'd gradually mix in the Nutro with the rice combination.... increasing the amount of nutro daily...

I'm not defending Purina dog chow, I agree it causes loose stools, but I do use Purina Pro-Plan chicken and rice formula for adults. Stools are firm and dogs are healthy and coats are black and full.

Roberta...I know a lot of people use Pro Plan successfully...especially Sporting Dog owners.

The key is if it works well for your dog, then that's the food to use!! Each dog is different, as we know.....!!!

Hi,

We did the slow switchover for Winslow onto Wellness lamb formula (2 weeks). He is still very loose in the stool dept, and he has been on straight Wellness for about a month now. We have 3/4 of a large bag left but I think I am going to switch to Canidea as I only hear great things about it.

I also heard it is better to use BROWN rice with the chicken or hamburger, as white rice is bleached and can cause other issues.True?
