Curly Tails in the Ring???

Here it is, I LOVE the show ring... I LOVED showing Van Gogh when he was healthy  I brought home my new pup Stella Monday. She moves like a dream and is nicely put together EXCEPT her flipping tail!!!

Now we picked her because she temperament tested very well and scored high with children (I have 2). But I really want to get her into the ring. What have your experiences been? Is there a way to "train" her to hold her tail out? There are times when she holds it correctly. My hubby thinks it could be a puppy thing??? I don't think so.

Has anyone had any luck showing/finishing a pup that has a tail that curls?

Mojo has a high tail and has done fine showing even with me as his handler. Took second in his class at the national and got a few points from the puppy classes. Sometimes he holds it straight but not usually. I haven't bothered trying to train him to hold it. Too busy workin on obedience water and draft. I don't like it but a very wise person told me they all have faults just some more easily seen and would rather have a high tail than a bad front etc. So no it hasn't been a problem for us and while I wish he had a beautiful straight tail I choose to focus on his strengths in the ring rather than his faults.

Good post KatieB.....My beautiful Bobo, now gone to the bridge, had an up tail, but showed with it out for some reason. Don't worry about the tail just yet.

Cole has a "gay" tail. Not all the time. There's no kink...and it started curling upwards at about a year old. He does it when he's happy or excited.

We haven't had a problem at all in the ring. He got his CH after only 4 mos in the ring...alternate weekends.

They all have their faults, no dog is perfect. How she holds her tail is minor, IMO. I'm with Katie regarding the tail. There are MANY in the ring. She won't be unique.

Katie is right - all dogs have a fault. Although a "gay tail" isn't loved in the ring - to me - it's the least disturbing compared to a bad front, bad rear, soft topline etc.... Structural issues to me are far more important. Give me a gay tail over a bad rear or poor movement any day of the week... but that's just me
