Contraversial, bloat study.....

Well the new study on bloat is out, from purdue, i still dont buy into all these studies. they are well and good and sometimes very informative.
but.....
i feed high, they eat off the flexi feeders set on high, they have done this since 86, never had one bloat yet.
some say becouse wolves dont feed high that dogs shouldnt, well hold on a minute, did you guys ever see some of the large prey they bring down? they do feed part time standing up and level with the prey, head up a lot of times. they are ACTIVE while eating.
i have some trouble with people comparing domesticated dogs to the wild cousins, first off becouse us humans have messed with size etc... SELECTING whom breeds to whom, where in wolf society they select amongst themselves and decide who breeds when and to whome for reasons of mother nature being the boss.
when dogs are domesticated, and gene pools limited problems crop up.
do i feed high to PREVENT bloat?
nope, i do it to stretch the pasterns, very much needed in young growing newfs, i also do it to bring the toes up, also necessary for young growing newfs.
sorry but to many people with pets that fed off the FLOOR i know of that bloated, and not hardly one that hasfed off a high feeder that i know has bloated.
to many variables i think to be able to CONCLUSIVLY say that this is a contributer.

I use flex feeders also. When I first got Panda she would not eat her food elevated, so I slowly raised it and now she is fine. I started elevated feeding when I read about bloat. Better safe than sorry

Jeanie, did you read the new study? i think you can find it at purdue.
it states yet again that feeding high is a contributer.
i just dont buy it, the study is done with a limited amount of dogs.

However, the research design and statistical analysis are very good. Since there is no empirical evidence for raised dishes, I would not be too inclined to disregard it.

my personal opinion, i will continue to feed high as i have done since 86, seeing as how the dogs i know of that bloated in town here all were fed off the FLOOR
i will disregard it.
there is just way to many variables for this to be conclusive.
i am skeptical of so called "studies" for many reasons.
they are well and good but not conclusive.

I have been wondering about whether to feed high or low. First, I read to feed high, then I heard that feeding high may actually contribute to bloat (probably from the Purdue study?). I am curious as to how everyone is feeding their Newfs? So far, I'm with SarNewfie in the tried and true method.

A 110% increase in the incidence of bloat was found in the dogs who were fed out of raisesd dishes. The probability of this being due to chance was less than 5%. Fat listed as one of the first 4 ingredients is also correlated with bloat. I guess that I believe in science enough to go check the ingredients of my dog's food and change if necessary.

Ok this is a very hard decision to make . And to each his own. I made the choice not to high feed Tuggs and i never have. I made the choice after long considering and research and talking with my breeder . She said she has only had 2 cases of bloat in her 24 years of breeding , and she does not high feed. Remember this is my choice only.
