Coming in from the cold

In the last couple of days four of my puppy adopters have reported excessive drooling when their Newfs have come in from the cold outdoors. Checks in their mouths have revealed nothing abnormal. All four are spayed females, two years or older and normally do not drool significantly. This drool soaks their chest.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could this be due to eating snow or ice in colder than normal temperatures here in Southern Ontario?

Yes, my Newf isn't normally a drooler. EXCEPT when she eats snow. I haven't met the dogs you mention, but it has been my experience that the drooling from eating snow is normal.

My Maggie is actually not a drooler at all, except when food or drink are involved. Snow included. She LOVES to munch on the snow, and then gets pretty sloppy, at least for her. It doesn't happen when its just cold though - only when snow eating is involved.

My Maggie isn't an excessive drooler, only around food, if she's hot, and absolutely when she eats snow. I think it ups the ratio of water in their mouth because it starts solid, then quickly melts.

Thanks for the responses. From this forum and two other Newf lists it would seem that the combination of eating snow in especially frigid temperatures is the most likely cause.
