depends on what you feed and how often you brush them.

If you feed kibble and don't brush, the vet should probably once a year (just like human teeth at the dentist). If you brush them every day, then I'd let the vet decide when you go in for a yearly checkup...

I know people who give their dogs 2 soup bones a week and have never had to get their teeth cleaned.

My boys get marrow bones after their dinner and their teeth are fantastic. Garions are so white the glow in the dark :D
Raw marrow boness out of the freezer or you can get a dental kong toy, put toothpaste into the gaps and the dog brushes his own teeth.

if my guys end up with tarter, i flake it off with a scissors, with a dull end to them or rounded end, i am well aware of the enamel etc...
but i am not going to put them under as seniors for teeth cleaning, when i can keep up with it at home, i normally start my pups out with me rubbing their teeth and gums with my fingers!

I give marrow bones and I brush a couple of times a week. Two of the dogs have pearly whites, but the third needs professional cleaning.
Like everything else, it's that nature/nurture riddle!
