Cleaning filters

I have two filters I need to clean. They have been in my attic. Both are 52mm. One is a Rolev M.G. Skylight. The other is a Prinz Star. I am hoping I can use them with my 'new' lens. I got the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 on the way. I got it on ebay with a hood and a polarizing filter for $87 that includes shipping. It has a 7 day guarantee so if it isn't good I can return it for a full refund. Also the seller has a 100% rating. So I feel confident.

Anyway how do I clean these filters without damaging them?

If it's just dust, then a rocket blower is recommnded. Never use compressed air from a can.

If it's more than dust then you'll need a wet solution. I recommend "Formula MC" and "Pec Pads".

Formula MC is a solution designed for multi-coated optics. Pec Pads are lint-free wipes also designed for optics.

Worse case you can use lens tissue, but I'm not a huge fan of lens tissue. It's too thin and what-not.

Never use something like Windex on your lenses or filters, and don't feel like you need to clean them all the time. You're better off keeping them safe than cleaning them.

Beware that cleaning optics is painful. You'll make it perfectly clean and then there will be streaks. Then you'll need to clean the streaks. Then there will be new streaks.

Well since they are filthy I will try one of the wet solutions you recommended. If they don't clean up then really nothing is lost
