Kyla, my 18 month old newf/lab mix, and I recently completed our beginner classes at a local dog training club. To give a little back ground, I have had problems with her at the vet, who is a male, and men at the dog park.

The teacher gave me suggestions and we tried some in class. We went to the dog park on Sunday, and if she barked at a man, I would give him treats to feed her. She finally quit barking at them.

We went to the vet today for her heartworm shot. I scheduled the appointment with the female vet, but she left early on maternity leave and was replaced with a man. I warned him about her fear, but she did great. Not one peep out of her!!! She even let the other vet pet her. I am so proud of her!!

I see Annie often at the park so she knows the problem I have had with her. Kyla loves to bark at Russell so I can't wait to see what she does now.

We signed up for the class again. We are going to try it without the pinch collar this time. Next, I am going to enroll her in the manners class.

Scool makes such a difference, doesn't it! We took rory when she was a problem child and the change in her was amazing. It not only improved her obedience but her manners overall. She was much nicer to live with!

Obedience for a newf is so very important. That is why so many end up in rescue. That is why Sam did and why Chance/Bear did. They didn't have the training to be pleasant to live with. But as we know it only takes a few weeks of love and training to make the perfect newf. Right Patty????? How is Chance doing??

Yes, classes do pay off. It is great that you got out and practiced in the "Real World". You can be diligent in class, your home, your yard...you have to take the time to do it in public places as well so they learn to respond with distractions. YIPPEE for your accomplishments :D
Jeannie, Chance is doing great and is very smart. He learned alot from you and Gary. All he wants and needs is attention and gets lots of it, and is a true velcro dog. A LOT of love and attention goes a long way... ;) :D
