Cherry Eye

Hi all, I am new to this board but very glad to find it. Have a quick question. My 6 month old Newf has developed a cherry eye. I was given drops that did not do a thing. I was told surgery was the way to go but not sure if I should have the gland removed or to have it " tacked" I have heard pros and cons on both. If any one has been through this I sure could use some advise.
Thank you
Dianne

Sorry, I don't have any experience with cherry eye. Perhaps one of the others will be along shortly with more information for you.

Hi Dianne,

My understanding is that if the whole gland
is removed, you will have to put drops in
the eye(s) forever. But, if it is tacked,
and it is successful, then drops are not
necessary. Its really your call - I would
try the tacking and hope that it works, with
the understanding that surgery may have to be
done again if it doesn't hold. Tacking has
worked in two of the puppies that I know of
that have had it done. I think with the
tacking that they only remove a portion of
the gland, not all of it.

Hope this helps....

Welcome Dianne. I don't have any advice to offer but just wanted to wish you luck in your decision.

Welcome!

Our Sadie has/had cherry eye, as well as entropia(spelling???). We had it corrected through surgery last May. It was a fairly easy procedure, and we're quite pleased. We decided against having the gland removed because we would have had to put in drops daily.

Good Luck!

Annie
