Can't believe it

Well, I don't believe it I did it, but I switched my dogs from Bil Jac. I was tired of having to drive almost an hour to get dog food. I switched them to a brand called Black Gold. I chose the fish based kibble because it had no filler or by products in it. I did the "soak" test and it passed to I tried it, but I really switched them the stupd way.

I had run out of Bil Jac and at the last minute I was not able to get to Dayton to get more, so I switched the girls "cold turkey". I have to admit I expected upset stomach and for them to develope a good case of the runs. To my surprise not one of my dogs had any problems with the sudden switch--even Sara my 11 year old. No loose stools NOT even soft stools. They have been on it for almost 3 weeks not and I so far I like it. Even Sara-the most picky eater in the world-will eat it with out hesitation.

They seem to like it and they are doing great on it--so far.

Wow, not to sound too gross, but cold turkey switch with no runs, must be some good stuff. Bear is on California Natural Lamb and Rice, but I was thinking of switching because I have found a specialty store with more variety (the place I originally found the food only carried two premium brands, Cal Natural and Innova), but I'm caught between "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" and "what will I switch to", so I'm still up in the air. Anyway, glad to hear you won't have to drive so far.

Maybe it means that bil jac and the black gold are very similiar dog food?
most times it doesnt mean the food is any better just becouse the dogs didnt get diahrea, but rather that the formula must be pretty close to what they were on, also, if the foods that are in the natural category, pretty much are close, just that some may be more rich and thus cause loose stool no matter how natural the other food they were on, wich my customers most complain about the switch to calif natural or innova esp causing loose stool for quite a while to.

Does the Black Gold have the same high protein content that the Bil Jac does? My food has 22% protein, but I do have to drive for it. It's great you didn't have any problems with the change over.

The protien in the Black Gold is simular to Bil Jac. I believe the Bill Jac was 28% and the Black Gold is 27%.

Jeannie, I'm familiar with Black Gold dog food to some extent. Is the blend you are referring to the 27/12 Professional formula in the silver bag?

There is also a Blackwood dog food that has catfish meal though I don't know the protein percentages.

Yes, it is the one in the silver bag. Can you tell me anything about the product. It seems to be doing fine for my girls and they like it. Even Sara, my picky 11 yr old, comes running to eat now. :D

I chose this one because I liked the ingredients better than any of the other blends they offered.

Basically, Black Gold is a food popular with hunters, particulary those with coon dogs. It is a feed store product that is growing in popularity. They have several different performance blends, including several with higher protein and fat combinations. They tend to use meat meal as the first meat source whereas most other companies use chicken meal. A friend of mine feeds the 24/20 to his bloodhound and redbone and likes the results.

The 27/12 is a food designed for Summer use for dogs that are running on hot nights. The lower fat keeps them leaner and prevents them from "running hot", basically a hunter's term for becoming overheated and winded quickly.

However, for a large breed, the 27/12 is probably a good choice for the same reason. The lower fat levels help to keep the dog lean

Keep us informed on how your dog does on this product.

Jeannie,
For more info on Black Gold, you can visit their website at http://www.blackgolddogfood.com/

I called them today to request some information on their products as I am considering switching. Unfortunately, they told me that the 27/12 is being discontinued soon. They are replacing it with a 23/16 but I don't have any details on the ingredients for the new product.

Their recommendation was to me was to use the 26/18 in the black bag if you limit feed as opposed to free feeding.

Ok I have a question for anyone that might know on this. If they are similar in ingrediants (I havent had a chance to check out the black/gold website yet) how are the cost wise? More or less expensive than Bil Jac? Mine are on the Bil Jac right now and doing well but if I found a comparable food that was less expensive it might be worth investigating!

Much less expensive. I paid $15 for a 50 pound bag of Black Gold. Compared to $31 for a 39?? pound bag of Bil Jac.

Discontinue the Silver bag? I doubt if I would feed any of the other blends because they contained "by products". The silver is the only blend that didn't contain by products. Depending on what they replace it with, I may switch back to Bil Jac.....
