Canadian Poets and Newfoundlands

I wondered if any NN members can help me with a little Canadian history and poetry. Do you know of any Canadian Poetry written specifically about WWI. Of course Flander's Field is the first that came to mind. I wonder though, if you can think of other poems written specifically about WWI. I'm thinking I heard recently about a WWI poem by a member of the Newfoundland and included Newfoundland dogs in it...or maybe that was WWII.

The reason I'm asking is that my daughter in law's father maintains a website: http://www.warpoetry.co.uk/ and is the author of numerous books. He lives in England. He has been asked to compile a new anthology of poetry of the First World War He's been asked, as part of this, to include some Canadian poetry of the First World War. He wonder if you can tell me of any Canadian First World War poets or Canadian First World War poems that are particularly well known in Canada or if you have any favourites yourself. Any help will be greatly appreciated. The request does not have to include Newfoundland dogs, but I thought there were some poems about WWI that might include them too.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Cheers!
Jennifer

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Jennifer! My Dad had books of poetry by Robert Service - most notably - The Cremation of Sam McGee. Spooky tale and poem - an excerpt-

"There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee."

But there were also war poems - I don't know if this is the type of thing you are looking for?

Thanks so much, Paula! I really appreciate your response! :) I've sent the information to him as a suggestion of another Canadian Poet of the first World War.

Jennifer, I just spotted a title on Amazon.ca which looks like it could be a wonderful resource. Canadian Poets of World War I: An Anthology, edited by J. Baetz.

Best, Anne
