Buford vs Buddy (the Turtle) Round One...

So...Let's just say that Buddy has been a member of our family for nearly EIGHT YEARS. Buford TWO. (and a half...)

Before Buford, Buddy had the run of the house and the yard and the pool was *all his*.
Then Buford came on the scene. Crazy, Wild and Adventurous BUFORD!!
Buddy was no longer *safe*. Buddy's time "free & wild" was cut a bit short because of the 'tall hairy one'.
I figured that as Buford *matured* (as IF he ever will..) Buddy could be patient. After all, Turtles live WAY longer that Newfs.

Tonight, I *trusted*. I let Buddy out. I let Buford sniff and lick and even *gently* paw...(Buddy has a pretty strong shell!)

OMG, Buford wanted to eat him! Sautee'd with (or without!) Butter, Please!

Does anyone else have a Newf / Turtle household??

Buddy's hissing, Buford's barking, Mrs B is panicking!!!
They simply *must* learn to be friends!

Any / ALL tips are welcomed. Please. Help Us!! Give Peace A Chance!!!

Poor Buddy is back in his tank, (It's 55 gallons so don't feel TOO bad!) Buford is back in his kitchen....They've BOTH been sent to their "corners" to be fair!)

Help??!!

I wish I could help, but I have no *real* suggestions but here's what I have come up with...

1) You could try putting tabasco sauce on Buddy's shell
2) Spray Buddy with Bitter Apple or
3) So that they can understand how the other lives why don't you let Buddy live in the kitchen for a day while Buford is in the 55 gallon tank. Friendship starts with understanding!

I do know people who have both with no problems. we run an aquarium store here.
dont know how they did it though. guess they didnt have a Buford? I know my newf couldnt care less what we bring home but she is very mild mannered.

Mrs B is *DYING* laughing at the thought of 165 pound Buford in a 55 gallon tank!
~ Buddy gets (at worst) the kids room to frolic & play in.
Buford (King of the Mountain that he is....) wants the WHOLE house, Kids room & all!
I just don't want my Lil Baby Dog to stomple my Lil Baby Turtle!!
My *real* question is, how does one quell natural ANIMAL instincts??
Is it even possible??

Don't know if this will help any, but we have a cockatiel. We started early training Bär that when the bird is out walking/flying around. He likes walking around the floor more then flying.
Bär has to be in a down position, he is allowed to sniff, give kisses & be gentle. No pawing allowed.
This has worked good for us, but this is always done under supervision. But again we started this when he was a puppy, it might be a little harder with a grown newf, but with patients & positive reinforcement you can accomplish just about anything with a newf.

I do not have a turtle, but when we bought Annabelle home she thought she would like chicken and duck for a day-time treat. It is quite difficult to re-train a chasing habit.
we initially only had her on a short leash, when we were near the chickens/ducks. Anytime she pulled towards them we checked her and said "leave it" and quickly turned away...........This went on for days on end. If we were able to walk with or past the chickens/ducks without interest, she got a treat and praise. Eventually we put the chickens/ducks away with her (guiding to their pen). And she would get lots of praise if she walked calmly and good girl if she just pushed them quietly.
All our dogs can be left out in our garden with the chickens and ducks now. it takes a lot of time initially and after that a lot of supervised "off leash". Mind you you have to have a really good recall. Though you will not have a running turtle to excite the dog, so I think it should be easier to train them to be able to get together. I had no choice but to train, because we have always had free-range chickens and ducks. We have done this with all our pups and our newfy rescues. Sofar not one death. we did have one early chase, but it was nipped in the bud with a recall.
Happy training............Ronnie

LOL would someone please come to my house and wipe the coffee that came out my nose at #3 off my monitor?

I was wondering about Newfs and turtles as one of the families I did a home check for had one with the roam of the house. As for poor Buddy, it may just be a need to train the big lug? This coming from someone who can't get either of her dogs to leave any small critter alone. Elwood wants to play.... Maple wants to chow!
