Brushing teeth with Peanut Butter ?!

We're having a challenge with brushing teeth in our household...
our vet recommends using peanut butter to facilitate the process - this sounds odd to me...(but we're willing to try it)

What works for you?

The main suggestion I have is to start young.. that way they are still small enough they dont get away as easily cuz your still stronger. I just bought the doggie toothpaste and started out with just a little on my finger to let them lick it off. They all decided they like the flavor of it so that helps. Right now all 3 are good for the brushing of the outside of the teeth(the showing part when they smile) but when you have to get the insides of the teeth none of them really are happy with that. Maggie is the best at sitting for it, Alex tolerates it and JoJo fights ya (but we've only had her 2 1/2 mths) one thing I've also found is put one thumb inbetween their uppper and lower teeth when trying to do the insides of the teeth, cuz when they try to close their mouths and feel your thumb they stop cuz they dont want to bite you. (obviously only do this with a dog you really know & trust)
Good Luck...

Thanks...unfortunately, we're well beyond the puppy stage (although I'll remember this going forward!)

We'll pick up a few brands of doggie toothpaste and try it...

We started brushing all our girls teeth about 2 years ago. Sara was 8, Sam was 2. When we got Panda at age 7 we started brushing her teeth also. We never had any problems brushing..you just have to make it fun and make them want to have their teeth brushed. You cannot start all at once and brush. First just put some doggie toothpaste in the brush and let them lick it off. After they learn the brush has a treat, then you can slightly brush one tooth remember to use lots of praise. In just a few days you can brush all the teeth with no problems.

When we brush Sara's or Panda's teeth we have to lock Sam out of the room. She will lick the other dog's mouths or steal the toothpaste. Never a dull moment with Sam!!

Thanks- we'll give this a try. Beats rubbing doggie toothpaste on their favorite chew toy (which now is a doggie-toothpaste covered plush reindeer...) Yuck!
