Breeders, have you come across this?

Someone I know had a littler of 5 Newf puppies at the end of December 09.
About 3 weeks ago they noticed one puppy had problems with its eyes, took it to the opthalmologist where it was diagnosed with glaucoma.
Second puppy about a week later showed same symptoms.

Today they returned with the 2 puppies to the opthalmologist who said it was not genetic but did not know why it had happened.
He recommended one eye to be removed from the first puppy and to wait a few weeks for the other puppy to see what happened.

Have any of you breeders come across glaucoma in puppies which did not present at birth? If so, what was the treatment?

Glaucoma in people can be hereditary or can be from an injury and infection. I think it is the same for dogs. Is it possible these pups could have had an infection?

From: http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dog-health/eye-problems.aspx

Recent studies show that glaucoma may result from yeast infection caused by yeast bacteria (Candida albicans). Breeds that consistently featured among the highest for glaucoma prevalence from the period 1994-2002 included American Cocker spaniels, Basset Hound, Wire Fox Terrier, Boston Terrier, Siberian Husky, Cairn Terrier, Chow Chow, Norwegian Elk Hound and Miniature Poodle.

I'm not a breeder, but wonder are there antiseptic or antibiotic drops that could be administered to new born puppies to prevent such infections as a routine practice?

It sounds to me like the puppies acquire some kind of infection. I always check my bitch just before whelping for yeast infections. They can cause all kinds of problems.

Since the eyes are sealed shut at birth, you would not be able to specifically administer drops to the eyes of neonates.
