Bordatella reaction.....HELP!!

I did a search on the topic and didn't really find anything to help me. I'm hoping you can give me some advice.

Brinks got the Bordatella vaccine spray through the nose and on Friday (exactly one week to the day) started with mucous coming out of left nostril. I called VET and he suggested putting him on antibiotics. We talked about the problems that are associated with that and he said I could wait it out and watch that he doesn't get any worse. OK....he's eating and drinking and playing and being as normal as he usually is EXCEPT for the nose running mucuous issue. He has a little hack cough that he does a couple of times during the day but not much.

How long does this normally last? Is there something I should be watching out for? Is it ok to wait it out or should I put him on the antibiotics? I feel so bad about it....he was perfect until he got that vaccine. Any home remedies? I have added a Vitamin C to his breakfast hoping that will boost his immune a little bit. PLEASE HELP!!!

Also the vaccine is a 2-part....first the nasal spray and a month later the injection. Should he still get the injection part???

I have never heard of the nasal being followed by an injection. My vet has never done that.

Many times when a dog is given a vaccination they will get a slight case of whatever the vaccination is for. Just like some people will get the flu after getting the flu shot. If it were me I'd watch the kennel cough but for go the injection. But again I am not a vet so talk this over with your vet.

I've had dogs get Kennel Cough symptoms after having the nasal immunization. I stopped doing the vaccine years ago, the ones I vaccinated ended up getting kennel cough a few months later..and it is generally such a mild disease, it's not worth it to me to hit their immune system with more vaccines that may or may not work.

Emmy had the same reaction from the nasal vac. as a pup. Couldn't get her into puppy kindergarten without proof of Bordtella vac. Antibiotics cleared it right up. She's had the shot every year since with no reaction at all.

So should I put him on the antibiotics? Did you have other problems with that like ear infections resulting from the antibiotics? How much time should I give it to clear up on its own before enough is enough without meds? He doesn't have any coughing....just the gook from his nose.

Sounds like he does have a secondary sinus infection from the vaccine. Antibiotics as per your vets instructions for dosage, and length of time. Always finish them unless the vet instructs you otherwise. Never stop in the middle of treatment, unless there is an allergic reaction, etc. Haven't had a problem here with ear infections from antibiotic use, but I know some do. Just be observant for any changes, and he should be just fine. Most of all RELAX!

I agree with Bluedog, go for the antibiotics. We foster dogs for German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County WWW.GSROC.ORG and almost every dog seems to come out with KC. Between Christmas up until now we have had 11 dogs develop Pneumonia and 3 died from it. Granted, these were dogs that came out of a cold concrete shelter, but I wouldn't let it turn into anything worse. Our own dog developed Pneumonia over Christmas and it was 2 weeks with fluids and Oxygen before he was better. Holistic is great when you can, but this is one of those situations that calls for the antibiotics. Good Luck and I hope he is feeling better soon.

Give yogurt if you are going the antibiotic route. It will help with diarrhea and ear infections etc.... I use the Organic, whole plain yogurt and about a tablespoon with breakfast & dinner.

When I first got Zeus, I went back to a vet that had taken care of my family's dogs for YEARS. She had just recently STOPPED using the nasal because too many animals were having the problems that you are experiencing.

She ONLY gives the injection now...

Thanks everyone for response. Brinks started antibiotics yesterday...Clavamox twice a day for a week. He already seems better after 2 doses.

Vet was nice enough to not charge for visit or meds. They said they caused the problem and they would fix it. I was shocked! and happy. Spoke with him about the Bordatella booster that we're supposed to get in a month. Vet still says it's a 2 part vaccine. I don't think I want him to have the second part..(injection) Not sure what to do about that. Isn't the nasal spray enough?

Carmella, Do you board Brinks? If not, then he really doesn't need the bordatella. I don't give it to mine anymore. I used to and it was only the nasal one too..they never had a 2nd part. I would question your vet. Tell him that most people are saying you only need the nasal. Maybe it is a different "brand" that he is using or something.

I went to a Vet Conference a little over a year ago and it was suggested that there is a wider spectrum of protection if the nasal vaccination is followed by the s.c. injection bordatella vax.

My advice..if you trust your vet...go by his/her recommendations.

My own experience, I have had reactions nearly everytime I've dosed the nasal vaccinations initially--usually a mild respiratory type reaction that is self-limiting. Usually it does not repeat with subsequent doses.

Glad to hear that Brink's is responding to the antibiotics!

I don't plan on boarding him but we do plan on maybe showing him and I do take him to a dog park every now and then so I was told that he needed the vaccine for those things. I do trust the vet we have. He said we would re-evaluate in a month and decide about the second part of the vaccine but he also said that it offered the most protection for him to finish it through. On the good side he also mentioned that since he has had a mild reaction to it...(no fever and no coughing) that he is building up antibodies to it and should be ok in the future.

All I know is that I'm not one for giving unneccesary meds BUT like children we just want to do whats best for them and give them what they need. All your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.....

So sorry your both going through this. A while back Cassie had loose stools and the vet gave me something to give her that Cassie had a bad reaction to. Her whole face swelled up. I felt really bad too. You do the best you can do to take care of your furkids and when something like that happens it is heart wrenching. Don't feel bad because you can't possibly know what will happen. We give our dogs what they are expected to get to insure good health. That's all we can do. Sometimes things happen out of the norm and you just have to take it from there.

Hope Brinks is back to his normal self real soon! And in the mean time, don't beat yourself up over it! :hugs:
