I just have a question. Brady has a black spot on his tongue and so does Kodiak their friend. Tim does not have one. I noticed alot of the newfs at fun days in Eliot last year had them also. Is Tim not normal?

Mowgli has a ton of black spots on his tongue. Angus and Mudji don't. There was a thread a while ago, on Newf-L I think, that said it was a recessive Landseer gene.

i dont know that is true though guys, my sampson was from lines of all black, no landseer at all, and he had spots, i think they said that it was more the ticking gene was carried by those that had the black spots on the tongue?

That's what I meant, the ticking gene... Guess my cold kicked in there for a minute....

Monty has three black spots on his tongue. The first time I noticed them I thought something was wrong. Then I turned to newf-net and sure enough someone had brought up the subject.

i dont know that it is PROVEN that the spots on the tongue are carriers of the ticking gene, and the ticking gene can be heavy or light.
i would just ride it out and see how lance turns out.
it is truly hard to breed for clear white, to me structure and temperament are first and foremost.

Akira has the polka dot tongue too ! I had no idea what it was from but knew other Newfs have it. I noticed it on many dogs in all the book I have. I think its cute !
I think the ticking is the black spots on the Landseers.

Ticking is the term used to describe the black spots on the white part of a Landseer. Ticking is not desired, so the less ticking the better!!
