How do you tell the difference between staph infection and hypothyroid when you have been battling skin problems for 2 years and you have black patches of skin on the poor boys groin and excessive shedding?

If he has a thyroid test does he need to be starved first?

Thanks in advance.

I think you need to go and see a good supportive vet, who can do all these blood tests and send them off to a good lab. There are some test where the dog needs to fast, but also some where not. the person who takes the bloods (at the vet) should be able to give you all the instructions to follow.
As for Staph infection.............A swab can be done and it can be cultured. It is extremely simple procedure and the result takes a few days, sothat the culture can be grown and tested for sensitivities. Also if you are an old nurse like me you can actually regocnize Staph by smell (dont' laugh it has been proven), I am especiall good with MRSA
The excessive shedding does tend to lead towards endocrine issues or allergies. But please try to get a supportive vet to help you............I hope it all goes well and take care
