Normally we tell people to watch their weight, they should not gain more than 10 pounds a month, be very careful, the faster they grow, the heavier they get growing to fast is dangerous to their joints. make sureyou can feel his ribs, if you cant back off the food, find a lower protein, preferably not a lamb based diet.
hopefully your newf is not from behemeth oversized lines. if so, you may end up with problems.

Yes They are the most absolutly best dog s in the world . sounds like he is doing well. I wouldnt worry to much about him puting on alot of weight, wasnt uncoman for tuggs to gain one week and then not so nuch the next. And he is not a GAINT BEhemeth Newf,He is 32 inches high and 163 lbs at one year and i might add he is still on the lean side . Has a beautiful gait and is perfect in movement! When wet u can see his ribswith legs as stright as poles. Just make sure u feed a low protien quality food with a protien no higher that 20% and weigh him often ,And give him lots of LOVE!

Lamb is low in taurine, a necessary amino acid.
A newf that is 32 inches and 163 pounds at ONLY one year of age is growing way to fast, either that or it is over the standard, and if the gait is that great, maybe the conformation ring would tell you just how good the gait is.
Emmett is 32 inches and 135 pounds he also is very heavy in bone.

My guys are talkers, as well they watch t.v.
they also attack the t.v. when there are critters, like bonking it with their schnoz.
they let me know when they want FRESH water.
heavon forbid they drink from the bowl without it being absolutly fresh.
just watch that weight, a quick gain like that normally is not good.
is this your first newf?

Luca's dad. Kodi has different sounding barks for certin things....i.e. wanting to go out, time to eat, barking at dogs on TV, people outside and yep, the water bowl...he has to have FRESH water. He doesn't like to drink again out of the water bowl he just slobbered in.

Sarnewfie...the books I have on Newfie's state the male height is 28" at the withers and females 26". Is the 32" height now an acceptable height for males? Have the weight charts increased also? Kodi is 28" and weighs 127 lbs and will be a year old on Tuesday.

NO Tuggs is NOT growing too fast he just had his yearly vet vist and is perfect weight for his hight. Sarnewfie you do not know my newf and u are not his vet or breeder there for you do not know weather he is growing too fast or not. And i do not need the confirmation ring to tell me how his gait is, besides how can u be an expert on a newf u have never seen .

Brenda,
Unfortunatly, in the breed standard, it leaves open, a few things, yes it states 28 inches in my NCA member book from 1992, it also states this, wich can be taken to the extreme by some:
"Average Height for dogs (note they say AVERAGE) is 28 inches and weight for adult dogs ranges from 130 - 150 pounds, it also goes on to state, "Large size is desirable, but never at the expense of balance, structure, and correct gait." many out there are not aware of what the correct gait is.
therefore this can be misinterpreted by many who breed the 170-180 pound dogs.
They can easily state, that their dog moves like a dream, usually stated by first time newf owners, who have no experience (no offense intended)
the best way to prove it, is to show, even if on a limited basis, i am on a very limited basis, we still win points the few times we were out.
i used to sit ringside studying many many breeds how they move and tested myself and some friends comparing what we chose to what the judge placed.
anyway, yes the standard is a bit vague, wich does put our newfs in a bit of danger.

That was very nicely said ,Sarnewfie, and i asure u that Tuggs will not be a 180 lb newf. And i had planed to show him but my own health failed and put me in aposition to here i couldnt.

Too funny about your newfies only wanting to drink FRESH water!
After Yogi drinks from his water bowl, there is usually just a bowl full of his drool left. It's pretty gross! I'll have to watch him too see if he's as finicky with his water too.

Until Molly came home, I had no idea dogs could be so barky! She gives me attitude and barks for everything she wants. She has an ear piercing bark when she's irritated. Example: Yesterday, hubby and I were moving bedroom furniture around. A dresser ended up in the hallway. When I went to get sheets out of the hall closet, I had to push the dresser across the doorway to the sewing room. Yep, Molly had gone in there and laid down. As I'm trying to pull out sheets, pillow cases, etc. I realize I'm being stared at. There's Molly sitting at the blocked doorway. Now, my golden would just go back and lay down, patiently waiting for me to move the furniture. Not Molly!! She's got this irritated look on her face and she's staring at me. I'm rushing now, saying, just a minute, I see you, I'll move it in a second, don't bark." Not good enough. She gives me 3 seconds to move the dresser. I haven't complied yet. She barks at me. I'm now apologizing to a dog! Hubby is laughing and saying "the princess says you're taking too long". I finish, close the closet door, pull the dresser out of her way.... and she doesn't move.

Life with my newfie. Never a dull moment! Linda

Sarnewfie, thanks for the info. I guess the most important thing to watch is the weight. We've started him on the canine Glucosamine and Chondrointin in his food. I don't want him to have any joint problems as he gets older.

LOL Linda, I could just picture you trying to move that dresser around with Molly watching.

Barking newfs!!! And I thought I had the only barking newf around. Sam barks all the time at anything anytime. She barks to go out, to come in, time to eat, go for a walk, I am taking too long, Sara is not where she can see her, the list goes on and on and on. Sam sometimes will just stand look at me and bark and bark--for no reason. I think just to be sassy.

YOu know back to the water, know that i think about it ive noticed that when i come home from work that Tuggs has only drank alitle out of his water bowl. and the minute i get home after he grabs me by the arm and drags me all over the house ,then gives me lots of slobbery newfie kisses he leads me stright to the bathroom to drink water from the bathtub, so i guess he is getting picky now lol

One thing I've learned quickly is that more times than not, most respectable experienced breeders know MORE about what makes a decent Newf then does the vet. Vets are great for diagnostics and treatment, but expecting them to know how fast or big a Newf should grow is dangerous. A typical vet might see a handful of newfs over their career. A decent breeder sees dozens and dozens and more, and they usually get to see champion lines at all of the shows.

Just a thought...

Well really Tuggs is fine! I talk to my breeder quite often And she is very well pleased with him and so am I.I really dont feel that i need to defend my newf to anymore to anyone . Im happy ,Tuggs is happy the Breeder is happy , so theres really no need for u guys to worry anymore REALLY!
