Beowulf of Maine

I've recently added another Newf-related book to the little man's library: Beowulf of Maine (the other one in the collection being "Old Dog Cora and the Christmas Tree")

This is a lovely book and it's become an instant favorite with Rowan. It's a very simple retelling of Beowulf, but all of the adventures occur mainly in the mind of and an adventurous and brave Newfoundland dog named Beowulf, who lives in Maine. Besides being a love letter to her own Newf (named Beowulf, of course), it can also clearly be seen as being a bit of a love letter from the author (who also happens to be an English teacher, of course) to her home state and her town.

The illustrations are something that have to be seen to be believed. They're absolutely GORGEOUS watercolors...vivid and imaginative and beautiful. They're so wonderful, in fact, that I plan on ordering another copy of the book just so that I can cut the illustrations out, frame them and put them up in the house somewhere. Here's just one example, a scene where Beowulf is dreaming about a mighty and fearsome dragon that he is convinced lives in the area:

I absolutely love this book, and while it is very much a children's story, any adult lover of Newfs, the classic poem Beowulf and art will love it too.

That illustration of the Newfie and Dragon has just given me an idea for some written art of my own. Thanks for sharing!

This is a great book. I've bought several copies to give to teacher friends. Not much prose so great for young kids as a bedtime story too.
