Help! Atticus won't let me trim his feet. He always let me do it before, but now he won't and his feet are starting to look like a fur explosion. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks!

Just do what you need to do. If he struggles and you let him get by with it then you are only asking for more trouble down the road.

The best favor anyone ever did for me was when Hudson went through the same thing. Just one day decided he didn't want anything to do with anyone touching his feet. A good friend with a lot of experience in newfs had him lay down and she straddled him and just did his feet regardless of his protests. She also made sure that I wasn't praising him when he was protesting ... only when he was laying there nicely. I've never had another problem since.

Okay Jeannie, I have a question. Indy all of a sudden has a problem with me doing anything to his feet as well. This is totally new. Anytime I touch them he pulls them away. Last time I tried to clip his nails and trim his feet he literally threw a tantrum and whined and cried like I was killing him. All the noise combined with him being physically combative made it impossible. Should I put him in his pich collar before hand? I am out of ideas and need help. I have straddled him and am fairly successful but it is a constant fight and he is huge at 130lbs.

Charlie has always struggled when I try to do his feet...perservere (sp?). Praise or treats when they are calm.

I just grab them by the jowel and give them a stern "Knock it off". Then they usually lay still.

Thanks Jeannie and all! I will put on my yard work jeans and get ready to tumble him. Will let you all know who wins the wrestling match later.

SUCCESS! WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO
It was the don't-mess-with-me attitude and a firm push on the snout. He let me trim his paws, his nails, and let me really brush that sensitive area around his butt. Of course, lots of treats and ridiculous loving afterward. Now can someone tell me how to do this and not end up with all the fur stuck to me? It's coating my shirt, up my nose...you know, everywhere. Wouldn't be surprised to find big wads of it in my socks or hiding in my bra later.

I just went for a nice walk at the park (WITHOUT the dogs; what a calm experience that was! oh don't worry; they had their swim in the river first!) and as I got out of the van I noticed all the black fuzz on my black jeans ... it was like a downy 'outer coat.' I was embarrassed. I had been brushing away their winter fur and didn't realize I was carrying half of it with me!
