Appropriate breeding ages for both males and females?

Brucellosis is only the tip of the iceberg..and not the one that is most common. There are mycoplasmas and things like that out there that give NO indication that there is anything wrong, but can be transmitted. PLUS...a culture for mycoplasma takes so long to get that by the time it's in, if your bitch was in heat when it was taken...it's too late to breed her!! (I just checked this on my last breeding...12 days for a mycoplasma culture here.)
Wouldn't mycoplasma affect the morphology and be picked up when evaluating the semen prior to a breeding?

Ginny,

I think mycoplasma is diagnosed using a different test then a regular vaginal culture. Is that true Cindy?

According to Dr. Hutchinson, you can culture mycoplsma from just about all dogs...where you get into trouble is if their immune system is compromised.

I'm not sure it always would. I suppose it could, but would it? It doesn't *always* negatively impact the reproductive system. It can impact many systems, but not always at once, and not always all.

That's what I meant when I said I didn't think you would get a good sample. Yes, mycoplasma is a separate culture..done with a different culturette and medium. And there are several different sub types of mycoplasmas that can occur..some are just normal flora, but others are not. If they get the wrong type, they don't have to be immune compromised for it to be an issue.

That's also my understanding. Mycoplasma can make one ill without compromising the entire immune system. It can cause pneumonia, for example, but that wouldn't have anything to do with the other systems.
