Apoquel

Has anyone used Apoquel for allergies? From my research it is a JAK Inhibitor and works sort of like the human drug Xeljanz, which is an arthritis medication. If you have used it or you know someone who has can you let me know that you/they think. My sister takes Xeljanz for her RA.

I need to get Chase on a drug for her allergies that I can use an Nsaid with. I give her a very low dose of prednisone for her allergies. When her neck starts hurting her I have to stop the pred and wait for 3 days before I can start her on an Nsaid. That is 3 very painful days for her. I put her on Tramadol and Gabapentin for the pain. They help but she needs the Nsaid to take down the inflammation.

Anyone have any other suggestions? The Apoquel cost $1.60 per pill and she needs 3 per day. for 2 weeks than 1 1/2 per day. I don't mind the money I just don't know if I want to use this medication.

I have a friend whose dog is on this and it has made all the difference in the world. While it's true it is quite costly, all the press I've heard about it has been extremely positive. It is in great demand so hopefully your Vet will be able to get it. I hope Chase feels better very soon.

I did get some for Chase. My vet said when it was first offered they signed up for it or something. Anyway they are on the list to always get it so they never run short. It is suppose to give relief within 4 hours. I'll keep you posted.

It is not like Xeljanz. Both are JAK inhibitors but different types of JAK.

Our Landseer ,Karma suffered terribly with red oozy areas on his neck, and frequent ear infections..Our regular vet just kept giving him antibiotics ,with little to no relief..We then started seeing a veterinary dermatologist ,who did a full allergy panel and discovered his issues were related to yeast, not bacteria..This was about 3 yrs ago, when Appoquel was just released and we had to go on a waiting list..It took about a year, and he has been on it ever since..Karma now is doing fantastic, very rare ear infections and his skin is in great shape..

According to my vet this drug is fairly new to the USA. I started Chase on it yesterday. I have her 1 1/2 pills at about 1:30. I have not seen her itch since about 5 p.m. last night. No itching at all today. It is wonderful. I am amazed.

So happy to know that that Chase got some relief. It's terrible to see a dog suffer with allergies, especially when Benadryl and steroids don't cut it.
