Antique???

I got this bug a few weeks ago, I wanted a chalkboard in my kitchen to help out with family communication. So I went looking on craigslist, found a pretty good sized mirror that I could mess around with. When we took it apart the mirror we found it was stamped and dated 4-5-66 but the frame has us a little stumped. When we stripped down the paint, it came off it 3 layers, top--red...under that--blue, and then some gold leaf paint. What we came to is this (see below) we are thinking it's a plastered frame? Anyone know how to tell? I've kinda fallin' in love with it as a mirror now and Vin and I are thinking we like it as is and may just varnish it to seal it. Can't seem to find to much info on the web but if the frame is plaster we think it's older than 66. Anyone able to share some knowledge? If it's plaster, the casting doesn't seem right (if you look at the corners the molding is cut off) and we also had some thoughts that maybe it was a bigger frame cut down smaller?

I would look at how the corners were joined. If it's an antique, the joinery would be different than a more recent frame.

Those slats or grooves do not fit the mirror (it's 1/4" thick) so we thought maybe it held a picture at one point.
