Hilliard is a suburb of Columbus... where Laura Loomis lives. It's an hour east of where I live.... they are on the edge of SCNC's territory, and I'll be happy to send them a schedule of our upcoming events!

I think Laura knows of a good place to train, but I've also heard good things about a place called "Columbus All Breed".

Columbus All Breed is the place I go, though it is on the far side from Hilliard. But it is by far the best place in Ohio. Also fairly reasonable with wonderful space. The puupy class is 2 sets of sessions. The adult class is 8 weeks. If you want to do any serious working stuff, it's really the only place for classes. They're online, but I can't remember the site off the top...

I;m a SCNC member. In Columbus we are halfway between SCNC and PONC. I liked the people I met at SCNC stuff, though, so that;s the club I joined.

There is also a newly forming Newfoundland CLub of Ohio. Their website is
NCO and most of their events are in the Medina area (about 1.5 hours north of Columbus). I am a member of both.

Anyway, if you want to have her email me, I'll be happy to get her plugged in...

Is she planning to show/work her dog?

Oh, btw, I'm in Grove City, which is about 10 minutes from Hilliard.....so we'll be near neighbors.....

It'd be nice to have some more newfie friends who are local.....

Thanx guys!
Yes i would love to pass on her email to you.
thanx both of you!
i appreciate this.
i would prefer she put him in conformation class right away so they learn along with the puppy from a good teacher.
this is their second newf.
they want to show in conf and work him.

I'm pm ing my email to you.

BTW, Cols All Breed does require either the puppy classes OR the adult classes before you can take their other classes (conformation, agility, fly ball, clicker, and others...see their website.... CABTC

They are the only place in columbus to go for obedience classes in my (humble???) opinion. The only other major suppliers are Petsmart (which is a great place to socialize, but not for a real class....and it COSTS More, too....) and some private people.

If she is only interested in a CONFORMATION class (NO OBEDIENCE AT ALL) the Central Ohio Kennel Club COKC offers conformation class. I have never had a class with them. And I think it is privately taught by a member, not really affiliated with the club, but I don't really know.

Personally, I feel that any dog should go through a basic obedience class. Esp one the size of a male intact newf. But that's just my opinion. I know several trainers at CATC, and they are wonderful people. I believe Susan Kirby also knows some people there.

When i plan on conformation, i do not let my puppies sit in the puppy class, i will direct her to ask the instructors if that is ok,
i used to think that way as you do, but not anymore, conformation classes are just as good and i would rather the dog not be encouraged to sit when stopping becouse it can be a hassle once it starts to show
not unless these people can teach her to teach the dog the difference between conf and ob wich takes a bit of trying.

here by us, i can take my pups to the puppy class and we just anounce that no one follow what i am doing, i heal along, but when we stop i stand the pup.
maybe they will allow that there.
thanx laura

Central Ohio Kennel Club used to have "drop in" conformation classes on Thursday evenings. These were informal 90 minute sessions where you would get ring time with someone going over your dog in a indoor ring. The actual teaching of conformation handling technique was minimal but it was a great opportunity to practice infront of mirrors and to get in some ring time.

Having Newfs that do both competitive obedience and conformation, I found the book "Dual Ring Dog, Successful Training For Both Conformation And Obedience Competition" by Jacqueline Fraser and Amy Ammen to be very helpful in my training Newfs to compete in both arenas. I have found it so much easier to show one of my Newfs in the conformation ring after they have earned an obedience title. At that point they have perfected the focus and control necessary to really stand out in the conformation ring. I have never had one sit on me when we came up to a conformation judge. I take that back. I did take a young bitch into the ring in the puppy class (6 to 9 months) and she did want to sit down. Actually I think she wanted to lay down and take a nap but that is Hasta for you, some thing don't change from the time they are puppies! Anyhow, everyone is different. What works for some is not necessarly the answer for others.
