Titus had a hot spot for about a week took him to our vet and they put him on Cephaloxin. On thrusday 10-18 I noticed his left eye was puffy. I thought he scratched it or Louie. Next thing I know by the end of the night both eyes are puffy and his jowles are puffy, no respiratory distress. Stopped the Cephaloxin and gave him Benadryl and called the Vet. Titus's face was less swollen by the end the night. Friday when hubby came home for lunch he had vomited a small amount. Hubby got a urine sample and ran it up to the vet. This AM he had vomited a small amount over night. The puffiness seems to move to different areas of his face now and not as bad. I started him on hamburger and rice just in case it is his food. The only thing that has changed in our house is new carpet ?? Could this be it ???? I talked to the vets office today and the UA showed slightly elavated pH and specific gravity was slightly elevated.
He is eating really well and drinking normally. His seems to be very quiet, which is not my Titus. Today the puffiness was in his jowles. He does not seem to be in any distress just very quiet. I will take him to the vet on Monday.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this ??? Thanks

Judy, I'm so sorry to hear about Titus.

Not only can your new carpeting be toxic, the padding underneath the carpeting can emit harmful fumes, if they used a stain protectant on the carpeting, that can be toxic, as well as materials used to install the carpeting. It can cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems in humans.

A fan and open windows are recommended, as well as an air purifier. Vacuuming with a well sealed hepa filter can help, too.

It's entirely possible that something else could be wrong with Titus, too. Has he taken cephalexin before, he could be allergic to that. Hope he's feeling better very soon.

Poor baby! The only time Jordan experienced a reaction similar to yours was as a youngster he swallowed a bee. The scary part was the reaction took several hours to develop and we had left for the afternoon while he was napping. Imagine coming home to a swollen face!

In the absence of Titus possibly consuming something you were unaware of, there remain only two other possibilities...the antibiotic or the carpeting. Here is a link to cephaloxin and its possible side effects: http://www.1800petmeds.com/pdetail.asp?SK=10049&SP=dog

Like any human medication we have to do our research and watch for possible side effects. Vet's offices don't always dispense that information.

Hope Titus is okay now.

Thanks BoundlessNewf I am very worried about him. I just wish I could figure out what is causing it. I am trying to eliminate things one by one to try and pin point exactly what makes it go awawy.

Hi Paula and Tara, Thank you both. He has been on Cephaloxin before with out any problems. But I guess like humans he could possibly have devevloped an allergy to it.
If it is the carpet I wonder why Louie is not having a reaction (Thank goodness). I put down a big furniture blanket for them to lay on overnight.Titus did have blood drawn when he went to the vet the first time, do you think that could tell if he was having a reaction to the carpet by his blood work ???

How is Titus doing?
I don't think just running lab work would tell if he is allergic to the carpet. They would have to run an allergy test specific to the substances in the carpet....

Titus is totally ok. Back to his spunky self :)I started him back on his food with no reaction and he has been laying on the carpet with no reaction. So my only conclusion is that it was the cephalaxin. Hope it doesn't happen again. We are keeping a very close eye on him. Thanks

If he has had one bad reaction to the cephalaxin, just be sure NOT to ever give it to him again. Just like with humans. Subsequent reactions can be much worse.

I think the information in the link I provided mentioned that cephaloxin was in the penicillin family. If so, then you'll need to have the vet place in the folder "allergic to penicillin and/or its derivatives."

Carpeting has a lot of chemicals as paula stated, in our house or any house we get in the future, if there is carpeting, it will be removed ASAP and replaced with tile.
while one dog may react another may not.
hopefully it is not the carpet and just that he is one of the few that is allergic to the drug.
glad to hear he is feeling better!
