ADVICE NEEDED -- Surgery question???

Samuel goes in on Tuesday to get neutered.

They said they would be giving him aceprocen (spelled wrong) and thiopen prior to surgery. Then they use gas to put him under.

Never have had it done this way before -- any thoughts...good, bad, whatever...

I don't know about the drugs you mentioned but I do know that newfoundlands are quite sensitive to anesthetic and some vets aren't aware of this. You should ask if they know of this and tell them to check it out before the surgery.

I did this and told them how sensitive they were to it. They said using gas is different and it wouldn't hurt them in the least. They said they (the dog) regulate it by their breathing.

I don't know what to think...

There was one vet up here that neutered a Landseer and killed it with the anesthetic. We are NOT going to him.

Oh how awful! Good thing your vet is aware. Everything should be fine. We had maggie nuetered at 6 months and I was also worried about the drugs they were using. Maybe someone else will be more familer with the drugs you mentioned. Good luck

I don't know aceprocen -- could it have been Ciprocin? That is an antibiotic. Thiopen-tal is a part of an anesthesia mix that tends to smooth and stabilize the recovery cycle from the anesthesia used.
