Adult coat?

Hi,

Just wondering, at about what age should Edward have his full adult coat? He's 17 months at the moment, most of his back has shiny guard hairs, but not down his sides. He has no feathers at all on his back legs yet, and some fluffy old red fur on his chest and shoulders (though no nearly so much as a few months ago).

Thanks,
Tricia

Hey Patricia, I think it can vary from dog to dog - our boy Boum is almost 22 months and has no traces of puppy coat. We've only had him with us for 3 or so months, but his coat has not changed over that time (so since he was at least 18-19 months). He does have brown traces sometimes, but that is either because he needs a brush or because of the sun.

Not sure about the answer on this one either... I can only share where we are with Obie at the moment.. just a day shy of 1 year. He has shiny black adult coat everywhere except a hint in his ruff behind his ears, and on the backs of his legs :ie his feathers and yak butt! Those still seem to be rather brown. I've been tentatively thinning in those areas but I'm not the most adventurous groomer!

I got Sulley at roughly 9 months, and he was already had a 'saddle' with LOTS of feathers and yes, yak butt which is a bit of a nightmare to keep brushed and clean since he doesn't like me there...he sits on the brush, so we tend to keep it a bit shorter there, and let the top coat sorta hang over.

the brown/reddish hair can either be dead puppy fur or it can be bleached form the sun or elements. Ours will get that way on their feathers if they lay outside a lot.
It can take males a long time to get their full adult coat. And some lines seem to take longer than others. Be patient. Keep him brushed and clean and feed a good diet and you'll be fine.

What Jennifer is saying is right. Cole didn't get full rear feathers until the age of 3. He had full adult coat around 18 mos, but it took FOREVER for that butt hair to come in.

And yes, the coat could be sun bleached...that will turn it brown. Some dogs coats stay very black yet others bleach more easily. Mira's is more sun bleached than any of our others. Addie's coat is also a bit sun bleached. Molly (the Landseer) is very black on her black areas. Both of the adult males are very black, virtually no sun bleaching. I do use a product with sunscreen in it tho.

Also, is he neutered? That can change the coat in many ways.

Gabe had his full coat by the time he was about two...but then even this past year (he's now 4...will be 5 in December) I noticed his yak butt is even thicker and more ridiculous and his feathers on his front legs are getting fuller and thicker. He also has brown areas on his feathers and I notice it more in the summer so I think it's from the sun.

Yes, this. Cooper at 3 is now getting much thicker in the behind (in terms of hair, poor boy is lacking in terms of chub!), although when we got him at age 2 he already had what I thought was his full adult coat.

Not all lines have full feathering on the legs. This can vary within lines too. Jill has a huge coat which she got from her sire. The 2 pups of hers that I kept, have different coats. Hazel has had most of her adult coat for months now and Buzz is finally losing his puppy coat. His adult coat is even thicker than Jill's while Hazel's isn't as thick as Jill's. Bottom line, you'll just have to wait and see...
