Acepromazine & seizures

Anyone have any experience with Acepromazine causing a seizure in your dog.

Gave Spirit 2/3 of a dose last night to calm him and he had two brief seizures about an hour later. I believe it may be due to a sudden drop in blood pressure. But don't know for sure.

Wondering if this has happened to anyone you know and if it was an isolated incident with no recurrences.

Fireworks have been going on for a good week, and we have gotten very little sleep, but last night (4th) was worse and he was really anxious. Will not be giving him any more meds for anxiety again.

I spent the whole night researching this and found that giant breed dogs may be more susceptible, and that low blood pressure and seizures are side effects. But am still worried that we may have recurring seizures in the future.

Would like to hear anyone's experiences.

Oh no! I have no experience with this, but I hope you get some answers.

I'm sure you've tried everything, but the fireworks made Ruby really nervous as well. The best thing here was to have her in the middle of the house with her Thundershirt, some loud white noise, and the TV on so it dampened the sound a little. She was panting and wouldn't settle. I put her shirt on her and less than 5 minutes later she was sleeping. So it definitely helps here.

I don't know anything about that drug but hope Spirit is OK. Have you tried Melatonin for anxiety?

My horse vet told me to stop using ace with my horse that has shown some neurological changes because she is concerned he might seize. I think it can reduce the seizure threshold for animals prone to seizures.

Have you tried the "Thunder shirt" for anxiety. My friend has used it on numerous occasions and has been a success. Just a thought.

Jane, someone on FB was dealing with LP in a 10 yr old, she went to a specialist (can't remember where) but they put the dog on Doxepin. I looked it up and it has quite a few side effects but maybe worth looking into.

Thanks guys. I've decided that nothing is worth giving Spirit any drugs ever again. He's been great ever since that night. Happy as a lark. Next year I will just plan on staying awake for the fireworks and giving him the support he needs. We'll make it through just fine.

I'm so glad he's doing better.:dance01::dance01:

Seriously, try the Thundershirt if you haven't though. :)

I tried swaddling him and also used a weighted blanket. The only thing that works is if I snuggle with him. Then he's calm and will eventually go to sleep. If I hadn't been so desperately tired that night, that's what I would have done. As it was, I copped out. Bad mommy.

Jane,

Don't mean to belabor the point, but please check out "Thundershirt" on the web. Apparently it is placed at pressure points that help calm dogs. Just a thought.

Thanks Sue. I am familiar with the thundershirt and know a couple of friends that use them. I promise I will revisit the idea.
