A DIY Newfie bed

After looking at the prices of the the X-large doggie beds - you know the ones that look like big pillows with flannel covers ($80-120 US - so imagine double that to get it in Canada), I came up with a do-it-yourself version. (GAD inspired me with his feeding bench
)

It is really simple if you have a sewing machine and can unpick and sew a straight seam. Buy a set of queen or king size flannel pillowcases (around $20-30 Canadian)unpick the long edge. Lay the two cases flat, one on top of the other, right sides together- with what used to be the open end of the pillow cases together. Sew up the two edges long edges and voila one giant removable Newfie bed cover.

If you used King size cases it will be 40 inches by 40 inches. If you used stadard/queen cases it will be 40 by 30. Most extra large doggie beds are about about 42 by 27. You can now stuff with whatever you want, easiet thing is two queen or king size pillows(which might run another $50 Canadian or less).

To make the case neater and resist coming off, you can sew large snap fastners or velcro on the open edge. TA DA! A Newfie size bed! Nice thing is you can great really great patterns and can possibly pick up all the supplies cheaper if you have a bedding outlet or can find a white sale on.

I haven't tried it out as I only thought of this while wandering around a white sale at the local department store yesterday. Once we get Arnie permanently - I'll make one up and report back here.

Thanks - still have yet to try it but I did make a mistake on one step when I said unpick long side seam - I should have said unpick both long side and bottom seam. This is so you have two flat square pieces.

Other types of pillowcases to try could be the knit jersey material or just plain old cotton/poly.
