8 Week Newf Mix - Now ours!

We became the proud family of a female Newf/ Shepard/Lab mix last weekend. Her father was a champion who jumped the fence and messed with the next door neighbor. Pups were put in rescue and we drove from PA to NC to get her. She is 11 pounds, all black, bear-looking with small eyes. We are hoping she looks very Newf.. I guess you could consider her a surprise package to come? Mom was 60-70 pounds, but Dad was 140. Noel's feet are so big, her coat looks like the newf pups on the net.. can people tell me about newf puppy traits? We also have a 6 yr old Bernese and I know Bernese behavior - what are Newfs - other than lovers of water and pretty laid-back?

Congratulations!!!
I think it's so wonderful that you rescued Noel!! How many weeks old is she?

When I was researching Newfs a long time ago, I found a book called The Right Dog for You. It's a very informative book and when I read it I struck me at the time how similar the Bernese Mountain Dogs' traits, disposition and intelligence were to Newfoundlands. I don't know if that helps at all but I thought I might as well pass it along.

By the by, the book also discusses phobias, behavior issues and maladies that are common in each breed. For Newfs, that paragraph read some akin to : The puppies often sleep in their water bowls. Newfs drool and snore. They can also have joint problems especially with their hips and especially if allowed to become overweight. That was it. Some other breeds had PAGES on these topics.
Congrats again!!

Oh, and we LOVE puppy pictures!!

Hi. congratulations on your new arrival. I had a male newf, a male bernese and now a female newf. The two males were very similar in temperment, personality etc. both excellent. Only the bernese drooled more than both the newfs ( the female is a whole other story)
