do you contribute?

Actually, I find it very sad. Tons of folks especially the elderly, don't understand that's what happens to thier money. I do donate but never money.... just for this reason alone. I would rather donate my money where I know it will be used properly. Don't get me wrong the Human Society has a purpose but over the years just like with anything else things we humans get involved with, it get outs of hand and the purpose goes astray.

My question is simple when I hear that people donate their hard earned money to them. "Do you see your local no kill shelters advertise on TV, and how much money do you think it takes to hire a celebrity and make a commercial?"

your local shelter people are too busy pounding the pavement and trying to get fundraisers going to care for the animals in their care, there is neither the money or the time to make a commercial. These my friends are the ones who truly put themselves out there for the companion animals. Just as your Newf Rescues and other breed specific rescues.

If any of you are involved in this rescue/shelter work I salute you for all of your efforts!

I am glad to hear the feed back, thanks so much , I hope we can educate others who give their hard earned money to someones pension!

My vet clinic is a big supporter of the local Humane Society, and even provide the space in their complex as well as I am sure deeply discounted vet services I am sure. There was a discussion on their Facebook about the national HS getting bad press. And as the vet clinic said, the money here stays here. I do trust my clinic. So I do donate there some.

Nope...never contribute to HSUS. I contribute to places that I know my $$ will go directly to the care of animals.

I never contribute to the HSUS. Just local HS (which has a great reputation) and other local no-kill shelters, including thoroughbred rescue.

If you work there and you know where your money is going then by all means do what you want. But when I donate for animals I want to be 100% sure it goes to themor specifically to the shelter that needs to house them. You can see my position can't you? If they are putting out commercials to tug at my heart to get money but it is not going where I believe it is, then to me I would have a hard time trusting what they say regarding anything.

The tax records are public, the CEO was paid handsomely in 2010 so I would imagine even more so with each year.
maybe you are talking about this news? http://triblive.com/news/2201940-74...ety-center-freedom-group-local-pacelle-states

Though there are many bad reports out there and it is not specific to just one humane society. I don't think taking my money then using it to pass laws that I know nothing about is upstanding, so it is just hard to trust. You know that fool me once... saying.

I see so many people here involved with finding Newfs good homes, I see them fundraising with products and I remember a few years back we all put a cook book together , had it printed, sold it and all the money went to Newf rescues. That is a labor of love and I see it here very often as I am sure it happens in other breed specific forums. These are the people I would not mind saying hey, you know what, here's 50 bucks, give 25 toward the animals and keep 25 for the gas you put in your car running back and forth for supplies or transferring the dogs to the vet's office. This is what I want my money used for.

I support my local shelter and a Newf Rescue that I know puts it's resources into actually helping the animals. I had a phone solicitation from the USHumane Society and I told the caller just what I thought of their practices...I made sure the caller knew I wasn't accusing him personally; just asked him to pass along my objections to the higher ups.

One reason I hate to donate in general. I perfer to do a anynomous donation especially since it has no effect on income tax deduction. And I generally only do local area too. Not long ago knowing one rescue in the area has had some big bills with my vet, instead of a donation to the organization, I gave money to my vet clinic to go against the rescue group balance.

At least I know my money in this case is directly to the health of a dog. I guess it could go to offest other money that may go to a use that lines a individuals pocket, but I doubt it in this case.

Wonderful idea!

I sent some money once to the World Wildlife Fund. Well, with all the mail, post cards, book marks, umbrella, water bottle, return address labels, and panda bear stuffed animal they have sent me since, I know my contribution just went to more promotional items.

I've called them six times trying to get off their mailing list. The items die down for a few months, but then start up again.

My mother sends a Disable Vet *charity* like $5 to $10 a year, and like you said, they bombard our mailbox with stuff. I keep telling her to quit. We may not be helping the disable Vets, but we maybe helping keeping one Postal Service job from being eliminated.

It is one of does songs that also has a lot of meaning to me as my Abbey Died around the time that song was played and played.....

I thought the stars that played or sang in these videos would have donated their time/product. And as for CEO's, I think for a business, even a charity, to make more money they need people to run them and in some charities the CEO's are paid a % of what they make. Some large charities are becoming too large and loose th picture of what they are doing. But some, even thought they pay the people that work for them well are still out there doing a lot of work. I have faith in our RSPCA, they are the ones working hard at leaglly putting an end to Puppy-farms and taking a lot of people who mis-treat animals to court. Which the little charity local shelters cannot afford and do.
Myself, I rarely donate $$$'s to charities , I give my time freely and I do some things for people and or dogs that solve problems at the particular moment. I have dogs that are called my Foster dogs, who live with some elderly folk and Mike and I are responsible for those dogs. We currently have two foster dogs and most like more in the future. I donate my time for behavioral problems to Dog Rescues and sometimes transport dogs for them too. And I do volunteer work. But some people find it easier to give $$'s and have no time. We should not stop them and still encourage them to do so. As there is still money needed to help all h=these animals in shelters.......

Thanks for the comments, respectfully yes most humane societies take people to court, but there is more that just one looking for handouts so I guess as long as you know and are satisfied with where you give that's fine. But I never see any laws they fight for when asking for donations . maybe with their literature that they send out for donations it should be included in the breakdown and what laws they are seeking to change. Unfortunately you have people trying to get laws passed due to their own agenda not necessarily my agenda which again is fine, but if you are asking me to give tell me why don't post a pathetic commercial and make me think all of my money is going to care physically for a dog or cat then say you'll send me a kit probably with a fictitious picture of a pet that is not even there anymore.
